SG® Junior Bridge

Read 9 Reviews   |   Write a Review

A chrome bridge/tailpiece as used on early '60s Gibson® SG® Juniors, SG Specials and Melody Maker solidbodies. The strings load from the front and pass over an integral compensated 12"-radius saddle, in the original design for a wound G string and non-staggered mounting stud placement. Allen screws adjust the overall string compensation.

About bridge & tailpiece measurements

String spread is the distance between the centers of the outer strings on a bridge or tailpiece.

Saddle radius determines the arc formed by all the individual saddle heights, and is similar to the measurement of a fretboard.

Stud/post spacing is the distance between the centers of the mounting posts of a bridge or 'stop' tailpiece.

Good, but you'll need a wound G

Good, solid product. Once I realized that I needed a wound G for this bridge, everything sounded good.

Intonation problems

I like very much the simplicity of this bridge, it's quality plated and precisely radiused, but the intonation on the G string is wrong. You won't get the right intonation there unless you use very heavy strings, even wounded G sets, as mentioned before.

If you really have to have a wraparound.

If you simply must have an authentic, cheap and cheerful wrap-around with no adjustment for intonation, then this is the one. But be prepared to use 11-50 strings. Old style guitars have limitations that come with their age. Who really still plays a '52 tele with the original wiring circuit.....very few I bet. Old don't always mean better. A guitar using one of these bridges usually has only a bridge pick-up.

Turn it up loud with lots of drive, and you won't notice the slight intonation problems. And you will probably be grinning from ear to ear having fun.If you by one of these, you already knew that. Pitch perfect players, steer clear. You have the wrong guitar...it's a Les Paul Junior. It's about fun. Look at the neck profile if you doubt that. And it only has one pickup.

Spot on replacement for an Epiphone SG Junior

The second hand Epiphone SG Junior I bought had ill-spaced chewed out grooves in the bridge for some reason.
This is a spot on replacement if you have one, and is made in Japan.

Nice shiny groove-free bidge again for just over $20.

The stud mount inserts require slightly larger diameter holes in the body, but I just left the old ones in there.

value vs money

for the price, is better than original, and possibly regardless of price.

sg bridge

This bridge did not work well with my early Melody Make.

Good Idea, But...

Lots of folks need these, but there's just one problem: The intonation is wrong for today's lighter strings with the plain, unwound "G" string. This bridge has the intonation set for the early 60's when most of these guitars came with huge strings. The "G" will never tune-up properly with this bridge.

Solution: Just have the manufacturer move the "G" section back. Gibson themselves have done this, but their bridges like this are very hard to find.
