Hipshot Hardtail Bridge

I like this kind of bridges ,their simplicity and design is why I purchased one.BUT the paint on black ones is not conductive,so I had to work on that to establish a proper grounding....but that wasn't much of a problem.

Placement for Intonation

First, I love the bridge. It looks great and has great tone. The only issue I encountered is placement. The specs say the mounting holes should be 26.125 inches from the bridge side of the nut for a 22 fret 25.5 scale. For my custom build (22 fret 25.5 scale), the mounting holes were made 26.158 inches from the bridge side of the nut, but that was still too close. I replaced the saddles with Graph Tech Ghost piezo saddles, which are the same length as the stock saddles, but to get the guitar to intonate properly, the saddles are pulled all the way to the back of the bridge, with no further adjustment possible. It intonated properly and tunes and plays great, but it still bugs me. For those that are replacing a bridge on an already constructed guitar, you'll have to go with the existing string through holes. For custom builds, you may want to plan on the mounting holes being 26.4" from the bridge side of the nut and plan your string through holes for that location. It's my own fault at then end of the day. When doing my own calcs on placement, I originally determined 26.4 inches, but with this being my first build I decided to go with the 26.125 calcs as I thought maybe they knew something I didn't. I'll be going by my own calcs from now on.

Amazing bridge, through and through. Just one problem, though...

The bridge in itself was amazing value for the money, with extremely well crafted saddles and base, made of splendid metal. Weighed quite a bit for its size, which makes for amazing sustain. BUT...for some reason, the bridge came without an Allen key to adjust the height of the saddles, which made fine adjustment a nightmare. And that's all that kept me from giving it five stars!

Perfect Replacement

The Hipshot bridge proved to be a direct replacemnet for my MIM Telecaster bridge. No muss, no fuss, just removed the original bridge and replaced with the hipshot, everything lined up perfectly. Greatly improved the tone. Completely changed the sound of the guitar from a weak tinny sound to a full bodied tonal spectrum. Excellant upgrade for my Tele.

Good Bridge but Not Perfect

This is a very good quality bridge. Easy to disassemble for install with enough screw lengh for proper intonation. BUT it has one problem I didnt realize until I played my guitar, the saddles have very sharp corners. This is only a problem for the outer most saddles (low/high E strings). If you palm mute your strings like I love to do, these sharp corners will imediately be felt. It's an easy fix with a small file and some fine grit sandpaper. But I can't help wonder why Hipshot hasn't fixed this problem during production...they should.

Rough Edges

I think the Hipshot 3550 bridge that I got from you is a well built but slightly under-engineered. Case in point, the leading edges of the saddles are quite sharp which is a concern to me as I finger pick quite a bit and dampen the strings with the outer palm of my hand to get that thump thump effect. The sharp front edges of the string saddles should be softened by rounding them off to make the bridge more hand-friendly; especially at the price range. Other wise it's a solid piece of equipment. Thanks, Lennis Hyett.
