The Les Trem is a spring-tension tremolo for Les Pauls® and other guitars that use a post-mounted “stop” tailpiece. The arm moves the hinged rear string-mounting bar to sharpen or flatten the strings approximately one-half step. The arm can be pivoted down out of the way when not in use.
Installation
Remove the strings, stop-tailpiece, and tailpiece mounting posts. The Les Trem includes two sets of replacement posts, one with M8 metric and the other with 5/16-24 threads. One of these sizes should fit your guitar. Thread the correct posts into the guitar, with one flat washer on each post. Feed the posts through the tailpiece holes, with the washers between the top of the guitar and the base of the Les Trem, and check for adequate clearance over the guitar. For more clearance, remove the unit and add plastic washers (included) on each stud.
To install the spring as illustrated, three spring spacers are provided; the thicker the spacer, the stronger the spring pressure. This sets the height of the tremolo arm for your specific gauge of strings. Try the medium spacer first. A thin disk of urethane is provided to attach to the bottom of the spacer to protect the guitar.
String the guitar to pitch and check the action and the height of the tremolo arm. If it's too low, use the taller spacer; if it's too high, use the shorter spacer. Tune the strings down and raise the arm before replacing the spacer.
The Les Trem is intended for traditional vibrato technique. Its non-invasive design lets you easily setup a non-tremolo instrument with a reliable, stable tremolo. Don't raise the arm too high, because the reduced tension on the spring and spacer may cause them to drop out.
