The bouzouki and cittern have become mainstays in Irish and Scottish folk bands. The author defines the modern Irish bouzouki as a long scale (24"+) fretted instrument with four string courses, and the Irish cittern as having a short scale (21-22") with five string courses.

Graham McDonald's bouzouki book

I purchased this book as there's a dearth of information out there on the bouzouki, my instrument of choice these days. Although my next build will be a guitar-bodied bouzouki, there's a wealth of ideas in this book that I can use.
The only minor quibbles I have is that the book has a lot of typos, there could be more pictures (especially in the jigs section) and, being metrically-challenged, I found myself constantly looking at the metric-to-standard conversion table in the back of the book.
This book, in addition to Mr. McDonalds mandolin project, is a valuable addition to my library. I think I got my money's worth.....

Everything you want to know about how a Bouzouki is built!

I got interested in Bouzouki's from a video I saw of a guy finger picking one on YouTube (an amazing medium!). Trying to learn about the instruments- and its variations is not the easiest thing to find information on other than the cursory instrument description that you'd find on instruments for sale. Even trying to find what makes a quality instrument vice an inexpensive beginners imported instrument is difficult.
My searching for information led me to this book- and more than answered all the unanswered questions I had! This book is probably the best source of information you can find on the instrument itself, be you a player or a luthier wanting to build one. I highly recommend it.
Of course, Stew-Mac is a wonderful source of tools, materials and information on instruments- and having purchased from them numerous times over the years, can't give them a high enough recommendation. They are ALWAYS prompt in their order processing and shipping... as reliable a company as I've ever, ever done business with online. I wholeheartedly recommend them highly.
