Spalted maple is prized by woodworkers in the fine arts. The spalting—thin black "zone lines" with a hand-drawn topographic look; mottled coloration and softer density—is caused by fungi under favorable conditions at the end of the wood's life cycle. This natural process produces a uniquely aesthetic appearance—nature's canvas! A spalted maple top transforms a solidbody guitar or bass into an exotic work of art.

This 2-piece bookmatched top wood set is sized for joining, gluing to a flat body blank, and profiling for a guitar or bass.
Approximate dimensions: .275" x 7-1/2" x 20" (6.99mm x 190.50mm x 508.00mm)
Note: Spalted maple is generally softer than mature maple, and usually absorbs stains unevenly. If necessary, super glue can help harden the surface before finishing. The wood should be sealed with pale dewaxed shellac or sanding sealer before sanding and applying lacquer topcoats. Add color to the finish coats if desired, rather than directly on the wood. Important: always wear a respirator mask when sanding and finishing spalted wood.
