Use our grading system to choose your soundboard...
Color: Higher soundboard grades have more consistent color (color affects the instrument's appearance only, not its tone).

Grain straightness: Higher soundboard grades have straighter, more uniform grain due to slower wood growth, with more grain lines per inch. Variations in grain straightness generally don't affect the wood's structural integrity. Closely spaced grain has been traditionally favored, but luthiers have found that wider grain can produce very good tone.

Quartersawn grain: The higher the grade, the more closely quartersawn the wood. Higher grade soundboards are usually stiffer, stronger and more resilient, and less likely to deform under string tension.

Grain run-out: Our soundboards are sawn from split billets to reduce the amount of grain "run-out," caused by a twist in the tree. By splitting the log, the twist is followed when sawing. Higher grade soundboards have less run-out, for more strength. However, properly braced lower grades can be excellent soundboards, especially for classical guitars. Englemann spruce trees grow at higher altitutes, and usually have some run-out due to their smaller diameters.

Origin and drying: Our soundboards (except Adirondack spruce) are from western North America, and have been kiln-dried and stored for up to a year.

Almost perfect

I bought three AAAA cedar tops and two of them looked awesome except for one that at first sight was not at the same level, the grains looked wider and less straight. We'll see how it works. All the tops come perfectly sawn and smoothed out

Too good for ukuleles

I've just received my AAA boards in the usual good time and can't believe the quality. I was going to use them for two ukes that I've been asked for, but think I'll be making a classical guitar instead. I might get AA for the other project. They're only ukuleles after all!

cedar soundboard

had been using the AA grade cedar tops but was a little upset with the colour grain and stiffness of the last batch so went for the AAA this time and they were excellent

Good quality

Very good piece of wood. I've seen grade AAA wood looking worst than this grade AA Cedar. Well done!

Nice Tops!

These are great tops for the money, especially if you buy three or more!. I have used these on several guitars with good results. I did receive a batch some months ago that was problematic, but Stewmac quickly took care of the issue.

Cedar Sound Boards

I was very impressed by the quality of the cedar soundboards I recently ordered, Even though I got the lower grade of wood, at a very modest cost, they were beautiful, with very nice grain, and many, many, tightly spaced grain lines per inch. Maybe you sent me the higher grade by mistake!? I'm no expert on tap tuning yet, but I had these boards ringing like a gong. I'm looking forward to some great sounding guitars! Thanks StewMac.

THANKS FOR YOUR EXCELLENT AAAA EXTRAORDINARY WOOD

In order to bring up to date my concert guitar collection, I have been using your extraordinary model AAAA of your small guitar western red cedar soundboard. Thanks to that extraordinary wood and to the outstanding craftsmanship of Puerto Rico's top luthier, Miguel Mendez, all the guitars which have been repaired sound much better than before.
