Affordable humidity/temperature monitor

Digital Humidity Gauge

Read 13 Reviews   |   Write a Review

Experienced luthiers try to maintain 40-50 percent relative humidity in their shops, the range at which wooden stringed instruments are most stable. Excess dryness causes wood to shrink and crack. Too much moisture can cause wood to swell, and newly-sprayed finishes to blush. It's easy to monitor your shop — or your guitar case — with this extremely affordable, accurate and space-saving digital hygrometer.

Caliber IV Readouts Inaccurate

I recently purchased two Caliber IV units for the workshop and timber store. I used a nearby Bureau of Meteorology weather station as a RH reference. Units were placed on a table with door open. It's raining and the weather station readout is 100%. I would expect the Caliber IV units to read ~99%, their maximum. Both Caliber IV units read 75%. Maximum calibration adjustment is +/- 6%. This was confirmed by manufacturer's email. Both units will be returned to Stewmac.

this works!

I took my new humidity gauge to the workshop of an experienced and trusted luthier friend who keeps his shop humidity constant and checks it constantly with two expensive gauges. To my surprise and pleasure my new gauge quickly recalculated and matched his gauges. This thing works!

Hygrometer and RH levels

It is minus 20 degrees F. in Denver this morning and the furnace contributes to an already very low relative humidity in my shop! It is imperative that I have an accurate way of measuring the RH in the shop so I can build at a constant level. Don't take a chance when for a few bucks you can know with confidence what the RH level is in your shop and avoid almost certain disaster. Robbie O'Brien

Essential tool for luthiers

To know the relative humidity when gluing on an instrument's braces is a non negotiable. Players also benefit from this knowledge of low humnidity in order to know when to use a humidifier in order to save them expensive crack repairs.
