Life in Athens
|
 |
|
Athens, a
college town known for its rustic and tranquil setting, offers a
unique blend of culture and nature. Nestled in the foothills of the
Appalachian Mountains, Athens County provides nature lovers with
some of the best hiking, camping, boating, and bicycling
opportunities in southeastern Ohio. The region is filled with
scenic lakes, waterfalls, caves, state parks, and rolling farmland,
as well as villages and towns that are home to historic railroads,
mines, and ceramic brick factories. Several annual festivals
feature a variety of foods to sample, Native American dancing,
chainsaw carving, and a state-wide guitar contest.
The presence of Ohio University the first university in
the Northwest Territory creates a cultural hub in Athens and
brings many plays, lectures, concerts, and art exhibits to the
area. Along with the College of Fine Arts at Ohio University,
Athens is home to several other art organizations and venues for
exhibition. USA Today recently named Athens, Ohio one of the top
ten arts communities in the United States.
Athens is home to a very active and diverse music scene as
well, with nearly a dozen live-music venues in the historic
downtown. The Dairy Barn Cultural Arts Center, built in 1914 and is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a respected
arts center, regionally, nationally, and internationally. The Dairy
Barn also hosts monthly contradances, accompanied by one of the
many local bands.
