Builders' Templates for F-5 Mandolin

Instructions

i-6082 Updated 09/07

Use the pencil slots to mark
the tone bar positions.

The peghead template includes the string post locationsand the shape of the truss rod access hole.

Stewart-MacDonald clear polyester builders’ templates are for quick, accurate layout of the body shape, f-holes, tone bars, truss rod access hole, and tuner holes. The templates have a scribed centerline for accurate alignment, and pencil slots for marking locations.

Remove the protective shipping film slowly and carefully. Masking tape may be helpful in removing it from areas where markings are concentrated.

Marking the mandolin top
Place the top wood on your work surface with the flat bottom down. Place the template on the wood, right-side up (so the words read correctly). Align the centerline with the top’s glue seam, and move the template until you’ve arrived at the position that makes best use of the blank top. Trace around the outside of the template. With top wood that is angled, you will need to tip the template onto one side then tip it to the other, but keep it centered on the wood seam. Remove the template.

Carve the top outside and inside to the desired thickness. (Some builders prefer to cut the top to shape before carving the arch, and some prefer to leave it rectangular and carve the arch first before cutting the shape.) After carving the top, realign the template on the centerline, mark the f-holes, and cut them out.

Turn the top wood over, inside up. Locate the template on the inside (upside down, so the words read backwards) aligned exactly with its positioning on the outside. Mark through the slots with a pencil to indicate the tone bars. Remove the template and connect the marks to show the tone bar locations. These are the guidelines for gluing the tone bars to the top. Use the template for the back shape, but there are no tone bars on the mandolin back.

Marking the peghead
The peghead overlay veneer should be installed on the peghead before using the template. Place the nut end of the peghead template at the break angle between the fretboard and peghead surface. The nut will be located on the fretboard surface. Mark the outline of the peghead and the truss rod access hole with a pencil. Mark the holes for tuners with a sharp awl (these marks will act as drill starters for drilling the tuner holes). Remove the template and saw, file and sand the peghead to shape. Following your pencil line, rout the truss rod access hole just through the thickness of the overlay.
