Tuning Machine Drill Jig for Unslotted Pegheads

Drilling instructions

i-4845 Updated 02/06

This jig is designed to allow accurate, repeatable drilling of holes for tuning machines in unslotted pegheads. When the adjustable spacing blocks are set, their hardened drill bushings accurately align and guide the drill bit.

This jig can be used with 1/4" drill bushings for “3-on-a-plate” tuners. Loosen the bushings on the jig rods, and place the jig over the string posts of one of the tuner units (most string posts are 6mm or 1/4" in diameter, which is suitable). Tighten the jig allen screws and remove the tuner unit (don't overtighten the screws).

Locate the drill jig on the peghead and clamp it in place. A wooden backing block is recommended on the underside of the peghead, to prevent chip-out when the drill bit exits the rear of the peghead. Drill the holes, clamp the jig onto the opposite side of the peghead, and repeat.

The 10mm drill bushings are for drilling pegholes for tuning machines which have threaded string post bushings. Such machines are usually individual, and the drill jig bushings require manual spacing. Use calipers or an accurate ruler to set up the jig for the proper peghole spacing. (Note: some 3-left/3-right Martin guitar tuning machines do not have a straight alignment.)

Extra drill jig bushings are available for other instruments. You can add one bushing for mandolin tuners, or add three bushings for 6-in-line or 12-string layouts.
