i-5275 Updated 02/07
Schaller D-tuners for 5-string banjo feature upper and lower thumbscrew stops for quick tuning between the keys of G and D. When all four thumbscrews are loosened, the tuners function as standard banjo pegs. These tuners are designed for installation in the banjos 2nd string (B) and 3rd string (G) pegholes.
3/8"-diameter pegholes are required. If necessary, the pegholes should be reamed to the proper size by a competent repair shop.
To install The tuner with the larger-diameter string post must be installed in the 2nd string peghole. Position the tuners in the pegholes so that the tuner thumbscrews are easily accessible in the playing position. Before installation, carefully make small indentations on the back of the peghead to match the locating pins on the tuner housings. Install the peghead washers and bushings. Wind the strings on the posts normally, clockwise on the 2nd string post and counterclockwise on the 3rd string post, as viewed from the face of the peghead. The large thumbscrews holding the tuner knobs must be snug before adjusting the tuning stops.
To adjust the tuning stops Loosen all four thumbscrews on the sides of the tuners, and tune the banjo to open G. Tighten the black thumbscrew on the 2nd string tuner, and the chrome thumbscrew on the 3rd string tuner; now each string cannot be tuned higher.
Tune the banjo down to D-tuning (2nd string to A; 3rd string to F#) and tighten the remaining two thumbscrews to set the lower stops. The tuners will now function only between the higher and lower stops.
Important Always tune up to the higher note and down to the lower note when setting the tuning stops. The slots in the nut and the bridge must be smooth for accurate D-tuning; the strings should not bind there. Rub pencil lead into the slots for lubrication. Never try to force the tuners beyond the tightened stops; doing so can damage the tuner mechanism.
