Use the pencil slots to mark
the top brace positions.

The slots marked "B" are for the back braces,
along with the center reinforcing strip.

Stewart-MacDonald clear polyester builders' templates are for quick, accurate layout of the body shape, soundhole, braces, bridge pad and tuner holes. The templates have a scribed centerline for accurate alignment, and pencil slots for marking locations.

Remove the protective shipping film slowly and carefully. Masking tape may be helpful in removing it from areas where pencil slots are concentrated.

Marking the guitar top
Place the top wood on your work surface with its best side up. Place the template on the wood (either side up at this stage). Align the centerline with the top's glue seam and move the template until you've arrived at the position that makes best use of the blank top. Trace around the outside of the template, and mark the dot indicating the center of the soundhole. Remove the template and drill a small reference hole to mark the soundhole's center. This hole will be used to align the template again on the other side of the wood (brace side).

Turn the top wood over, brace side up. Place the template on the wood, right side up, so the words read correctly. Align it with the glue seam and with your drilled hole at the soundhole center. Tape the template so it doesn't move, then mark through the slots with a pencil to indicate the top braces. Do not mark the slots labeled "B"—those are for the back braces. At the top and bottom of the body, there are two slots parallel to the centerline; they are also for the back's reinforcing center strip. Do not mark these on the top.

Remove the template and connect the marks to show the brace pattern. These are the guidelines for gluing the top braces. Repeat this procedure for the back, using the slots marked "B". (Do not mark or drill the soundhole center on the back.)

Marking the peghead
The peghead's overlay veneer should be installed on the peghead before using the peghead template. Place the nut end of the template at the break angle between the fretboard and the peghead surface. The nut will be located on the angled peghead surface, flush against the fretboard. The template has a scribed line to indicate the nut position. Mark the outline of the peghead with a pencil. Mark the holes for tuners with a sharp awl (these marks will act as drill starters for drilling the tuner holes). Remove the template and saw, file, and sand the peghead to shape following your pencil line.
