I should of watched this before I did my first fretting job.

I should of watched the basic DVD before I attempted to do my first fretting job on my 000 guitar kit. Dan does a great job explaining the how-to and gotchas of fretting stringed instruments. Personally I thought that fretting, and doing it right, was one of the hardest tasks in my guitar build. I like the approach of explaining how to do the job with tools that you may already have around the house along with showing some of the other luthier fretting tools that are available.

Great videos. It's like I'm standing in Dan's shop receiving repair training personally. Very detailed information and techniques shown. It's well worth the cost of these DVDs to learn how to avoid lousy repair techniques that will take more time and make the outcome less desirable.

Too Much Advertisment

By

I got the basic fretting video to reinforce what I already knew. It said it would focus on basic tools and techniques but I saw a lot of advertising of Stew Mac tools which I have plenty. The just aren't cheap by any means. I also was disappointed it missed the one thing I was looking for. It doesn't talk about fret slot size and ordering the appropriate fret size, but since I have every single fretting tool you could imagine it wasn't really a big deal. The video was supposed to be based on basic tools and it wasn't really.

What about compound radius fretwork!?

By
(Customer's Reviews)

The Fretting Series are pretty good and insightful, but I was VERY disappointed tof ind out that it didn't cover fretwork on compound radius fingerboards! That was one of the reasons -if not the main one- that I purchased the series to begin with. I didn't think it would omit such a relevant area of guitar fretwork.

Fretting series covers most everything, enough to send you down the right path. Sense then I have learned additional techniques as you will with practice. This is a great place to start.

Fret Basics DVD

The day I got the DVD I slipped it into the player and watched it, end to end, like a movie. I was well pleased with Dan's ability to explain what he was doing as he went. All too many times, when it comes to the "masters", they can "do" much more effectively than they can "teach". Not so with Dan. He knows what he is doing so well that he makes it look deceptively easy. Then, when he explains the process so well, it begins to seem that the concept IS easy and that is JUST enough to give me hope that I might be able to perform the steps he describes. One particular "hole" that he filled for me was the setup of the neck prior to leveling. That is.. getting it straight and in the right position before leveling the frets and I have never quite had a grip on how to do that. And, as the name implies "Fret Basics" all of his work is done with hand tools. Some are indeed specialty tools that must be purchased but others are things that one might already have on hand or can be adapted from an ordinary tool. Dan explains the use of each tool that he uses. I would say that, if one ever hopes to be able to perform their own fret leveling/crowning this DVD should be considered an essential place to start. Thank you Dan!
