Gauged Nut Slotting Files

About This Item

Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots for nuts and saddles. Ensure your strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing!

Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more than a few thousandths larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side to side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

Save 10% by purchasing the complete set
Always have the right gauge for cutting and shaping string slots on any instrument. Complete set of nineteen files includes every size we offer.

Tip: Slotting Tune-o-matic style saddles
Nut slotting files work great for metal saddles. Choose your file size as you would when slotting a nut: use the same gauge as the string, or a few thousandths larger. After filing to the desired depth, we suggest polishing the slot with Mitchell's Abrasive Cord to remove file marks and burrs.

I receive the tools this weekend into my house, because one friend bought them from USA. The quality is so high and the adequation to the work is fine. This week I have reserved one piece of one bone's nut to try those tools...

Perfect Nut Slots

By

I have accumulated a set of these over the years. They cut smooth-sided slots with round bottoms for rattle free string support. These files can be be rolled to achieve a wider cut if the string gauge is slightly larger than the file. They are quite durable and will last a long time even with regular use. Care should be taken not to push too hard with the thinner ones like 0.010 as they will crack if bent more than slightly. These files and a pro-touch to your nut-work.

Nut Slotting Files work Very well!

By

Verified Buyer

I love these files for working on almost any kind of stringed instrument! I'm mostly concerned with various types of banjos, and an occasional guitar, mandolin or uke. Even work on oddballs like an Azorean Viola da Terra. They do wear out on bone - especially the thinner ones, so keep extra 0.010 and 0.013 gauge files on hand.

stewmac nut sloting files

Just received a set of gauged nut slotting files from stewmac last week. They work great! I made a new nut for my used les paul and tuned up a couple of Teiso ones already. They seem to be good quality and true to the width printed on them. I've used slotting files that were not so good and realized that a good set of these is pretty important to getting a fast, accurate setup. They shipped quickly too. Thanks, Stewart-MacDonald Pete D.
