Gauged Nut Slotting Files

About This Item

Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots for nuts and saddles. Ensure your strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing!

Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more that a few thousands larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side-to-side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

Tip: Slotting Tune-o-matic style saddles
Nut slotting files work great for metal saddles. Choose your file size as you would when slotting a nut: use the same gauge as the string, or a few thousandths larger. After filing to the desired depth, we suggest polishing the slot with Mitchell's Abrasive Cord to remove file marks and burrs.

Gauged Nut Slotting Files Did The Trick

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I purchase a new Telecaster that came with 9's strung on it. I prefer 12's, but the slots were too narrow for the four low strings. I order four files that most closely matched by favorite set of strings. A couple swipes with the files for their respective slots and the strings seated perfectly. The quality of the files made for the quick DIY adjustments.

Top quality product

I run a professional shop now in our 20th year, and 40 years behind the bench: these tools are great: smooth cut, clean surface. I'll fold a piece of 800 and finish the slot and edges to debur .

Highly recommend for the pro and amateur tech or builder. The nut spacing rule is handy as well!

I have assembled my own Franken-strat which is made up of parts bought on ebay it's a copy of David Gilmour's iconic Stratocaster. I needed to be able to get the nut slots set up accurately and bought the appropriate files. They are superb and got the job done really quickly and accurately. the guitar plays like a dream now. Thanks for a great product dispatched quickly at a great price.

I have a few guitars which needed nut maintenance, strings binding etc, I hoped that they might have had an abrasive side, but they did the job fine.

excellently made

The files work perfectly. they are very aggressive in their ability to cut. for me they are better as they get broken in. another thought when using them is as you approach your final depth slightly lubricate the file teeth and this will provide a smoother final cut.
