Gauged Nut Slotting Files

About This Item

Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots for nuts and saddles. Ensure your strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing!

Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more than a few thousandths larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side to side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

Save 10% by purchasing the complete set
Always have the right gauge for cutting and shaping string slots on any instrument. Complete set of nineteen files includes every size we offer.

Tip: Slotting Tune-o-matic style saddles
Nut slotting files work great for metal saddles. Choose your file size as you would when slotting a nut: use the same gauge as the string, or a few thousandths larger. After filing to the desired depth, we suggest polishing the slot with Mitchell's Abrasive Cord to remove file marks and burrs.

Gauged Nut File- Improvement

By

Verified Buyer

I just received these Nut Files and I am sure they will do a great job, but I feel the thinner ones .010" to .20" need to have a stiffener added on either the sides or top to keep the file straight. The .010" is particularly 'bendy'.

right tool for the job

By

Well before purchasing the Gauged nut files. I thought I could get away with the rather expensive set of Italian feather files. Just shows you that the right tool makes things that much easier. The slotting files are excellent. Thanks again.

a great tool for Gibson nut problems

By

Verified Buyer

I bought a beautiful Gibson ES 137 semi hollow body electric guitar. I love it, but I noticed early on that open chords just sounded lousy. Chords barred on the neck and lead sounded great. I did some research and learned of the "infamous Gibson nut problem". Several knowledgeable people confirmed this. With cautious optimism I called and spoke to the salesman at StewMac and he confirmed it was a common problem and easily fixed. I didn't want to chance ruining the nut so these files were the answer. Not cheap, but way cheaper than sending the guitar off in a box on a wing and a prayer and paying a distant luthier or hoping gibson would fix it. The salesman guided me in purchasing the gauge for my guitar and the strings I use. I proceeded to use a chromatic tuner to tune each open string and then fret at the second fret and look for a sharp note. That was the slot that needed to be deeper. One or two passes with the proper file and then re test. Better? Leave it be and go to the next.Only 3 strings were bad,(Mostly high E,B, G, and some on the D) I did this again a week later to fine tune it and I am very pleased. I repaired a major problem myself for $80 and now own the tools if I or a friend needs to do it again. Love you guys.
