Product Details

Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots, to ensure that the strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing.

Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more that a few thousands larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side-to-side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

Tip: Slotting Tune-o-matic style saddles
Nut slotting files work great for metal saddles. Simply use the same techniques you'd use for nut slotting (read more in Making a Nut, Step-by-Step). After filing to the desired depth, we suggest polishing the slot with Mitchell's Abrasive Cord to remove file marks and burrs.

Almost too Quick for Comfort!

These are not your ordinary files. I'm not quite sure what I was expecting when I ordered these. For many years I have become quite accustomed to using bench files and rasps. I was kind of kicking around the idea that maybe these nut files were in some way similar to Swiss cut bench files. Was I surprised!

These are like diamond coated files. They also proved to be quite evenly coated which was also a surprise and real treat because they cut better than typical bench files.

I needed to cut a new bone nut I had installed on my '77 Electra X410. These files cut VERY quickly. Almost too quick for comfort! Probably should put a warning note on them.

Of course, I was well pleased with the finish. Much smoother than I expected. I had a small piece of polishing cloth handy to clean out the string slots and they felt quite smooth as they were so I strung up the guitar and it tunes easily and holds that tune very well.

Stew-Mac has a real winner here. If you don't have any of these files you would do well to start building your set now.

Good slot cutter

Love these nut files but in my opinion you also need some of the abrasive cord to smooth out the slots after filing. Also in my opinion, you have to do that with any slotting files. These cut fairly quick so that's a plus.

These files also is good and really save time, but the end of the edges are flat in small sizes and little bit round at big sizes but have not good grip as the others !

So If they had the end edges perfectly round like a string, i do not have use the old strings to make the round cuts, all kn

nut slotting solution

By Josred from VA USA

I always used a small triangular and round needle file to slot nuts, but this file is absolutely perfect, as I can do all the string slots, narrow and wide, by simply angling the file a little to widen the string slot. Quick and accurate!
