Details

Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots, to ensure that the strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing.

Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more that a few thousands larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side-to-side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

Tip: Slotting Tune-o-matic style saddles
Nut slotting files work great for metal saddles. Choose your file size as you would when slotting a nut: use the same gauge as the string, or a few thousandths larger. After filing to the desired depth, we suggest polishing the slot with Mitchell's Abrasive Cord to remove file marks and burrs.

Great tools, but I need ONE more . . .

These are fantastic. Good length, cut quickly & cleanly, just a perfect, simple tool. Now how about a .125 (it's an eighth!) so I can cut some low B slots on a 5-string bass nut?

wouldnt do a nut job without them, but how about bringing out some more thicknesses to choose from so any size string can have that perfect slot size?

Nut files, nutcase

Nutcase because I could have saved myself a lot of effort and frustration if I had simply purchased these years ago instead of fluffing around with needle files!
Needle(es) to say that these work great for E A D G on 4 string bass, but one for the low B would be helpful in the future.

Nut File Fix

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I just recently purchased a set of nut files to finish off my Stew Mac Dreadnaught kit built earlier this year. I built the guitar under the instruction of a professional luthier, who had all the tools but we were limited on time of use for the class. I got as close as I could in time allowed but not quite where I wanted to be.

I've since use my new nut files to complete the job. The action at the top fret in now perfect, the files were the exact tool needed and made the work much easier without having to guess. Thanks Stew, I plan a few more guitar making/repair ventures so keep the rest of those tools handy, I'll Be Back.

Perfect tool for the job

By
(Customer's Reviews)

In the beginning I made a few nuts with just 2 or 3 files, rocking them back & forth to file the appropriate size slot, but recently purchased a broader selection of sizes, and my nut making & setups are going much more quickly, and with greater accuracy!

The G slots on my Ibanez mandolin were not cut deep enough and, this file was the perfect solution. Took no time at all and, the problem was corrected. Using the right tool for the job makes all the difference. Glad I found StewMac for this tool and their Great how to alticles.
