Details

The most durable and efficient nut-slotting files available. Specially designed for nut slotting, each file cuts two different width slots.

Each 9/16" x 7-5/8" (14.29mm x 193.67mm) steel file cuts on the edges only, and tapers from the center to a different thickness on each cutting edge. The set of six files does the work of twelve!

Rubber-coated handles give firm, comfortable control for the job. The complete set includes edge widths for filing round-bottom nut slots on most stringed instruments, including basses. Each file's cutting edge is approximately 3-7/8" (98.43mm) long.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more that a few thousands larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side-to-side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

The most popular Double-edge Nut Files are included in the Essential Nut Making Tool Kit, which has all the basic tools you'll need for shaping, string-spacing, slotting and fitting string nuts like a pro.

Tip: Customize your files
We recommend that you mark on each side of your files so while working you can quickly tell the different gauge of cut.

Here's how: make a cut on a scrap piece of bone or wood with both sides of the nut file, then measure the width of each cut with feeler gauges to determine which side is which. Guitar strings of known gauges will also work as measuring tools in a pinch.

Once you have determined the proper edge, mark the file accordingly with a permanent marker.

I'll Wait ....

I have used every set of nut files available and still grab them all up to do a job efficiently w/o compromise. These work well, but I won't spend pending additional sizes I use often.

 Double-edge Nut Files

I bought the complete set of files. Im happy with their use and quality of construction. The only thing that I think improved, are the flat edges. Flat edges make flat slotts. I consider the gauged nut slotting files a better option.

Great but need more sizes

Makes filing nut slots a dream, they file like butter. Though there need to be a few more sizes in my my opinion, so that you don't have to rock the file so often if there is a size that's just too big for the gauge

Speedy Files

I like these because they cut sideways too so you don't get stuck in the rut. How many times have you went a little sideway on that low E string just to chip that side off a bone nut. I just wish they were gauged 10-46.

Very good tool, but,...kinda pricey!

I purchased the smaller of the set of six, to open up the string slots on my new Epiphone Wildkat, equipped with a Bigsby tremolo. Since I am not a 'guitar shop', and this is my first experience modifying/customizing a nut. I;ll buy the size I need, when I need it - of course from StewMac.

Highest quality files for an effortless and professional job. These files are an asset to my guitar workshop. Don't be fooled by cheap imitations..

I bought 3 of these and am very pleased with them so far. Used to free a sticky slot on my classical guitar - two minutes work and I can tune it properly again. A Strat-type refurb project will be the next use.

OK files for the job

By

Warning - before you use them the first time, take an engraver and mark the gauges on the metal. The inked numbers on the plastic handle wear quickly. Other than that they do the job as well as any other file. I think they could have sized them a little differently because a couple have no corresponding string diameter. But it's a good starter set and then you can fill in the gaps with individual files as the need arises.
