Luthier's Digital Caliper

About This Item

Our Luthier's Digital Caliper combines precision, ease of use, versatility and an attractive price, but its usefulness for fret work makes it special.

Customized for fretwork!
We added a custom jaw notch for accurately measuring fretwire crown height (the height above the fretboard). This is essential for comparing new wire to original wire. And thanks to a great idea by repairman Frank Ford, we've also added a notch on the depth gauge to measure fret height on the instrument—a real time saver.

  • Measures fret height before AND after fret installation
  • Accurate readouts in inches, millimeters, or fractions
  • A must for all precision guitar work

Handy for lots of other measuring jobs in the shop—nuts, saddles, tuners, tool setups and more—this caliper has long-life stainless steel jaws. Featuring LCD digital readouts in inches, millimeters or fractions, it measures outside, inside and depth dimensions up to 6" (154mm), with super-accurate .0005" (.01mm) resolution. The jaws can be locked at any position.

CR2032 battery and durable plastic storage case included.

Digital Caliper

I already had one of these digital caliper that I have been using for the last few years - It's been very accurate and reliable, I just ordered a second one only because of the way I have my shop set up - I have two benches - one I use just for setups and inspections in the front of the shop, and a bench in the wood working area - Now I have a Caliper for each bench. I would definitely recommend the purchase!

Got this for my husband for Christmas....he was SO pleased and surprised! I thought he had something like this and felt like the digital might be better.....He said this was one of the things he needed so badly and was so surprised that I found it!

Stewart-MacDonald always seems to have just what he needs that I don't know about. I saw this and something told me this would be perfect. It was!

Thank you so much for your quality products and the best customer service!

Even better than the earlier version!

By

I used the earlier version of the StewMac digital caliper for years and was quite happy with it - until I saw there was a new model. It had new features I couldn't pass up: a bigger display, readouts in both digital and fractions of an inch, and an auto shutoff. So, I moved my other caliper to a different bench and bought the new one for guitar work. I absolutely love it and look forward to many years of great service from it.

Be aware of Battery operated Calipers

These Calipers are fine until the batteries start to deplete. They even warn you in the instructions that the accuracy will go down as the battery depletes. They are suspect at best to me unless a new battery is installed, which is a pain.

Seems to work well and provide repeatable accurate results. I love the fractional inch mode and look forward to being able to measure fret height when needed.

An essential tool for fretwork!

By
(Customer's Reviews)

We provide these calipers for our students at The Guitar Services Workshop. It's an excellent product to help you when re-fretting a guitar. Our students learn how to measure the height and width of the crown to evaluate their work. It's also perfect for measuring the tang & barbs, so you choose the right size for the fret slots. We highly recommend this tool for anyone that strives for excellence when replacing frets!

digital caliper.

In my 48 years as a guitar maker I have had 3 or 4 verniers. which is the correct name for this tool.
Back in the day they were completely manual. Not always easy to read.
Some years back i bought the first digital vernier that stew mac offered. that was fantastic. easy to read accurate and fast.
Over ther years it was dropped or knocked off the bench a few times and became unrealiable .
This new one is super nice.I like its big format numbers. the fact that it switches on as you open it is a huge bonus, and more so that after a few minutes it switches itself off. So often i left my old one on and ran out the battery.

What I do not like it that if I am measuring the depth of anything I have to subtract 2mm off the measurement ........this is almost a deal breaker.

IE if I need to measure into a inlay cavity the little rod sits 2mm inside the slide.
Because of this I almost sent it back as this is important to me to be able to read off depth using the slider piece inside.without having to do maths to work it out.
For the rest a great tool.

Response from StewMac

Thank you for your feedback. There is a button that allows you to "Zero" out the reading. This will prevent you from having to do any math when taking the depth of a cavity. Just sit the end on a flat surface and make sure the rod is flush with the surface. You can then hit the zero button and you will be at a reading of 0.

This is my second one....because.....

My first one worked great for a while and it stopped working. Stewmac replaced it. I have use the new one for and now it's on the fritz. The display flutters up and down around .006, even when locked down. Just started out if nowhere. Very annoying. Looking into something different.

Response from StewMac

We apologize for any issues you have experienced using this tool. I have sent you an email regarding this review and we are happy to offer you a refund or another replacement if you want to give it another try. Having one fail during normal use is not a common occurrence and having two fail is very rare. We are happy to do whatever we can to make this right.
