Great Upgrade, But Know the Facts First!

Like many newer Gibson® SG® owners, I bought the Golden Age Pre-wired Harness for Gibson SG to replace the tone-sucking PCB pot and cap contraption that Gibson has been installing in the past few years. This StewMac harness lives up to its promises. The upgrade is totally worth it and greatly improves the tone of the pickups, in my case Gibson 57 Classics. The pickups are much brighter and with higher fidelity when turned up all the way, and the tone keeps its fidelity when the volume is reduced (of course, that's characteristic of the 50s wiring).

However, I had a small setback during the initial installation, and I wish to offer the benefit of my hair-pulling experience to other Gibson SG owners who also seek to replace the PCB. One reviewer below had the same issue but didn't find the solution, but with a little Googling I found the answer. It seems that Gibson isn’t consistent with their published standards when it comes to their pickup wire colors and the PCB pin layout. On any pickup manufacturer's tech page, you will find that Gibson's color codes are as follows:

Red = hot
Black and bare = ground
Green and white = tap

But, look closely at the connectors on the PCB pickup wires, and the color arrangement will be different between the neck and bridge pickups. You have to wire the pickups to the StewMac pots correctly, or else the middle setting will be out of phase and weak sounding. The following is correct, at least with Gibson's current production pickups and PCB, for the SG Standard's PCB to Golden Age conversion:

Gibson Neck Pickup
Red = hot
Black and bare (soldered together) = ground
Green and white (soldered together and taped) = tap

Gibson Bridge Pickup
White = hot
Green and bare (soldered together) = ground
Red and black (soldered together and taped) = tap

The harness was easily installed in my SG - only problem was the wiring for the switch was too short for my configuration, but StewMac sent me replacement wire at no charge to fix the problem easily. Sounds great, very clean.

Great upgrade for my Epiphone G-400. The guitar holes needed to be enlarged with a hand Reamer, mounting was easy, some quick easy soldering. Good instructions.

Expensive but worth it...unless you're a proficient soldering tech

I absolutely suck at soldering. Ruined plenty of electronic components and wires. This kit saved me lots of time and pain! Expensive but high quality parts. Solder it yourself to save a bit of cash if you can solder well.

A timesaver

Very nice timesaver. 16 bucks more than the parts themselves. Saves me lots of soldering time. Highly recommended. I rather be playing guitar than spending time messing with them!!!

I managed to break the shaft on the bridge tone pot on my 2007 Gibson SG-61 reissue when I smacked the knob on the edge of a table. I had intended to buy just the one replacement pot but when I started looking around the site for parts I decided to give this pre-made harness a go. The parts quality and build quality are both very good and the unit fit the SG perfectly. The sound quality seems like it may be a bit of an improvement - the guitar came with handwired full-size pots so the only obvious difference is the caps (the original ones were ceramic). It seems to be a bit clearer when rolling back the volumes or backing off on the tone controls. I had already tried changing the SG over to the "50's Les Paul" type wiring before I installed the Golden Age kit. So to sum up it fits perfectly and really seems to suit the '57 Classic pickups my SG came with.

Don't waste your time or money on this

I just installed my wiring harness today... Don't be fooled by people saying that it just drops in and installs like a breeze. Also, do not think it is going to make a stock Gibson SG sound any different.

I installed it on a 2017 Gibson SG Standard today. What a waste of time, money and effort.

First of all, it did not even fit properly into the cavity, and I ended up having to use a pair of fingernail clippers to trim a small amount of the plastic edge off 2 of the pots to get it to fit. So far so good.

Next, the directions are totally inadequate and describe a pickup with 2 wires. Unfortunately, Gibson humbuckers have 4 wires, so I called them and asked what to do.

The response was the Red wire is the hot wire, the Black wire and bare wire go to the ground, and the Green and White wires get taped off. Unfortunately, they didn't mention that I need to CONNECT the white and green wires before taping them off. So when I was done installing it, and tested it out, there was NO SOUND.... Gotta love that.

So then after cooling off for a while, and looking up a wiring diagram on the internet, I found out that I had to connect the white and green wire. Thank you Stew Mac...

SO i resoldered everything again. I plugged it in, and it sounds exactly the same.

Don't waste your money unless you have some crappy Epiphone model, because it isnt going to sound any better.

It actually sounds week and out of phase in the middle position now, but I am too pissed off to make a third attempt. I followed the directions down to the letter, and it sounds like crap.

I am going to end up taking it to a guitar tech, and spending a ton of money, when I could have just kept it stock.

Thanks again Stew Mac.

Used for Epiphone SG Replacement

By

Was replacing my Epiphone SG Pickups with Seymour Duncan Humbuckers and wanted to replace all the wiring and pots. The wiring harness and switch seemed to be of good quality although I did crack one of the unused ports on the tone pot :(.

Be aware the holes in the Epiphone do NOT match the width of the harness. I did have to enlarge them with a drill which really wasn't a problem. Everything JUST FITS. Not a whole lot of room but was able to get it all in there.

I look the orange caps. Everything sounds good, low noise...

Got it to replace the PCB assembly my 2015 SG special. This plus some Golden Age hot humbuckers got it to a much better sound with very little effort. The pre-wired kit is beautifully assembled, dropped right in, and saved me a bunch of time soldering and sourcing materials. Worth the price.
