Shielding single coil guitars

By Joe Dragony Guitars from Carmichael, CA

I recently used Stew Mac's copper tape to shield a 1958 Strat and a Tele clone that I built. The results were almost unbelievable. I used the 2" and 3/4" tape. While dealing with the tape was a bit infuriating at first (the adhesive is VERY aggressive) I got used to it and the job went faster after the first couple cavities were done.

Take your time, make sure you are marking asymmetric shapes from the correct side of the tape (don't ask...) and it will work out fine. Use star grounding and solder the overlaps between tape sections. You will be amazed at the results. The Tele that I made has drilled channels rather than routes between the cavities. I used brass tubing through the drill channels and soldered the copper tape to the tubing for continuous shielding.

For any of the "Vintage" mavens shocked at doing anything but drooling on '58 Strats, this is an instrument that was on the road in the '70s with Stevie Wonder, the Ojays and other groups. It has an anatomically correct naked woman in pearl on the fretboard, Corvette metallic blue paint with stars, moons, and another naked lady on the body. Thus, no vintage hangups... The owner thinks of it as a tool. But now the engineers don't say " Hey what's that buzzin' out there? Can you stop that buzzin'??

Since covering the entire cavity and underside of the the pickguard of my strat (single coil pickups) there has been a dramatic improvement in the susceptibility of the RF and 60Hz hum. Do it! Buy the 2" and simply use scissors to cut to fit. Make sure it connects to ground at some point.

Excellent copper tape!

I always get mine from Stewmac because, like all their other electronic items, it is high quality. Great stuff!

It works

I've installed this in 3 guitars and it helped kill hum in all of them quite well. Very easy to install, and sticks for a long time.

What I needed

Just what I needed at a fair price.

Gets the job done, but not completely effective

The copper tape is made well, with adhesive conductive backing so you don't have to solder any joints if you don't want to. Test it with a multimeter--it will all be continuous if you press it flat. My only complaint is the way that this is marketed, for reducing hum. It really only protects against one variety, and there a handful you can encounter on the gig. I would never consider this a cure-all for hum, just one line of protection.

The shielding tape was perfect! It was easy to apply and worked like a champ to keep my guitar project quiet! Thanks again STEWMAC!

Unbelievable

By JLondon from Owensboro, KY

I had never shielded a guitar before so I didn't know what to expect. I had some new "noiseless" DiMarzio pickups that were noisier than the Mexican Strat pickups they were replacing. Although I also bought the Stewmac shielding "kit" to do this job, I ended up using only this wide roll in tandem with one of those metal blanks that sandwich between the underside of your pickguard and guitar body. I used no extra wiring or soldering. I was hoping for an improvement, but never expected the 100% wonderful silence that resulted. I can now push my effects pedals and amp to limits never obtainable before and have new space on my board where I've taken away my tone squashing noise supression unit. I think I'm going to make a pyramid hat out of this stuff and wear it (grin). But seriously this simple inexpensive item is one of my two favorite Strat upgrades to date after 40 plus years of playing. (the other is the Wilkinson/Gotoh VSVG Vintage Tremolo - also sold at Stewmac)

I installed the copper foil in a Gibson Les Paul Special with P90 pickups that buzzed like crazy. Easy to use and very effective at getting rid of hum. Lined the control and pickup cavities. Highly recommend this.
