Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers

About This Item

Straight-up raw vintage! Closely modeled after an outstanding vintage P.A.F. set from our own collection. That sweet tone was just too good to keep to ourselves!

True vintage sound.
We christened these exceptional humbuckers in tribute to the famous Kalamazoo address where the holy grail of pickups, the legendary P.A.F. (Patent Applied For), was born.

Just like the originals, the slug coil has more windings than the polepiece coil, and both coils are unpotted. Old P.A.F.s weren't made in separate neck and bridge-position models, and their DC resistance varied from 7-9K ohms. We give you a choice: Parsons Street neck-position pickups are wound to mid 7K, and bridge-position models to low 8K.

Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers sweet vintage tone was crafted to vintage P.A.F. specifications:
• Nickel-silver cover for tone transparency
• Original 1.97" (50.04mm) polepiece spacing
• Plain enameled AWG42 coil wire
• Black paper coil tape
• Wood spacer
• Choice of Alnico 2 or Alnico 5 magnet
• Nickel-silver baseplate
• Single-conductor braided shield output wire

Your choice of original-style magnets:
• Alnico 2 for warm tone with smooth highs and a soft bottom response.
• Alnico 5 produces a clear tone with more pronounced highs and a tighter low end.
(Original P.A.F.s contained Alnico 2, 3 and 5 magnets at various times.)

Neck models: mid 7K ohms
Bridge models: low 8K ohms

Swapping pickup covers on a rare lefty Lucille

Making new pickups look old: Brand new pickups looked too shiny in this guitar that had seen a lot of gigs. So Dan Erlewine opened the old pickup and put its cover on the new one. This meant cutting the solder joint and resoldering.

Wiring a humbucker to get two sounds

Erick Coleman shows how he modified a Parsons Street Humbucker, turning it into a switchable single-coil/humbucker combination.

PAF greatness

I really dig the tone on these pickups and for at least half of the price of actual Gibson brand pickups it's amazing!

Super upgrade

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I installed these pickups into my Oscar Schmidt OE-30 Delta King, along with the Emerson Pro pots, orange drop caps, and a Switchcraft switch. Now this guitar sounds as good as it looks and plays! I never in a million years thought that swapping these components would make such a huge difference, but all I can say is WOW! If you own a budget guitar, but like the way it looks and plays, show it some love and upgrade it with these parts. Doing these simple modifications will give you a guitar that can easily hang with other guitars costing thousands of dollars, but you'll keep most of those dollars in your pocket!

Also, get some quality shielded wire, some electrical solder, flux, and of course a soldering iron if you don't already have that stuff. As a semi-professional tinkerer, I had everything necessary, but SewMac has anything you might need right here.

Really good

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I bought one a few years ago. Currently have an Alnico II in the bridge of one of my archtops. It sounds great in that capacity (the bridge pickup that I don't use much) and has a really "airy" sound. I only wish they'd offer the Alnico II in a potted version. I went full EVH with mine and potted it myself. Glad I did. Even though I play jazz I think the potting is a great way to ensure you can play at louder volumes without the foolishness. Otherwise, it's a wonderful and literally have the price of the Gibson. I think these are every bit as great and sound wonderful.

Parsons Street A-5 humbuckers

By

Consistent and pleasing quality. Fit and finish is superior. Tone is sweet and fat and with a roll on to 11 there is just enough breakup to make life wonderful.
I can recommend these to anyone needing a fresh set of hum buckers for just about any style. If you don't like them your tone is in your fillings.

I originally purchased a set when they first came out. I put that set up on on my YouTube Channel to show all the guys just Really How GREAT these pickups are and for a Great Price. Imagine wanting that original Gibson Sound and not paying $300 dollars. Now that I am making the TEXAN guitar Im offering the buyers a choice of these same pickups. And so far all that want a Gold Top have chosen these pickups. Great Job at StewMac. Thanks

I got the A5 for the neck position on my Dot (Epiphone es335). They have a great tone thru a tube amp.Sound is rich, heavy duty lows and they can be brought out of the muffled range. The highs and mids have real feeling to them. they are soulful and strong.

Great sounding pickups

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I installed a set of these pick ups on an inexpensive arch top guitar I recently purchased, They were easy to install, thanks to the long wires that come with the pickups. I removed the old pickups and installed the new ones in about one hour, including the time to solder the wires. They sound really mellow and clear. I am very happy with the quality and tone of these pickups. They are a good value and made a big improvement in the sound of my guitar.
