Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers

About This Item

Straight-up raw vintage! Closely modeled after an outstanding vintage P.A.F. set from our own collection. That sweet tone was just too good to keep to ourselves!

True vintage sound.
We christened these exceptional humbuckers in tribute to the famous Kalamazoo address where the holy grail of pickups, the legendary P.A.F. (Patent Applied For), was born.

Just like the originals, the slug coil has more windings than the polepiece coil, and both coils are unpotted. Old P.A.F.s weren't made in separate neck and bridge-position models, and their DC resistance varied from 7-9K ohms. We give you a choice: Parsons Street neck-position pickups are wound to mid 7K, and bridge-position models to low 8K.

Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers sweet vintage tone was crafted to vintage P.A.F. specifications:
• Nickel-silver cover for tone transparency
• Original 1.97" (50.04mm) polepiece spacing
• Plain enameled AWG42 coil wire
• Black paper coil tape
• Wood spacer
• Choice of Alnico 2 or Alnico 5 magnet
• Nickel-silver baseplate
• Single-conductor braided shield output wire

Your choice of original-style magnets:
• Alnico 2 for warm tone with smooth highs and a soft bottom response.
• Alnico 5 produces a clear tone with more pronounced highs and a tighter low end.
(Original P.A.F.s contained Alnico 2, 3 and 5 magnets at various times.)

Neck models: mid 7K ohms
Bridge models: low 8K ohms

Swapping pickup covers on a rare lefty Lucille

Making new pickups look old: Brand new pickups looked too shiny in this guitar that had seen a lot of gigs. So Dan Erlewine opened the old pickup and put its cover on the new one. This meant cutting the solder joint and resoldering.

Wiring a humbucker to get two sounds

Erick Coleman shows how he modified a Parsons Street Humbucker, turning it into a switchable single-coil/humbucker combination.

Wow, great upgrade!

I completely rewired my Ibanez AF-75 using Parsons Street humbuckers (Neck: Alnico 5, Bridge Alnico 2), Switchcraft switches, Orange drop caps, and shielded wiring, all from Stewmac. I came up with a wiring scheme that works great for me, and I'm very happy with the new tone and grit that I can get with this setup. I enjoy doing my own guitar mods and Stewmac is my most important resource. Thanks, Uncle Dud

Have not installed it yet, but hopefully it will sound as good as it looks. Workmanship and finish are beautiful; reads 7.62k on my meter. Perfect.

Great tone from Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers

I had my first attempt at putting a guitar kit together that I bought from an Australian company and was made in Indonesia. I was very impressed with the quality of the kit until I plugged it in for the first time. The wiring was all plug together and play but you had to guess which plug went where!!!! No instruction!!!!!!
The resulting noise that came from the instrument was very disconcerting to say the least and changing plugs made no difference as there were too many combinations. The guitar hung on it's wall bracket for a couple of months.
Finally I decided to check out Stew Mac's pickup catalogue and settled on a pair of Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers and the Premium wiring kit and I followed Eric Coleman's advice putting an Alnico V in the neck and an Alnico 2 in the bridge It was an interesting experience following the wiring diagram to put it all together and them get muddled putting the pots into the cavity the wrong way round.
Long story short, the package took only three days to come from Ohio to Australia (congrats DHL) and a further week and a half from Sydney to where I live (100 miles) but that's the way it is here...... I need to better my soldering skills in the neatness department and couldn't be happier with the tone that I am getting out of my guitar.
Well done guys.

Great tone!

I put a set of these in an SG that I built and it really surprised me when I plugged in for the first time. I'm running it through a Blues Jr. amp and the clarity is perfect for me. I think the all mahogany SG shows the PAFs off really well, tonally, and there is enough difference in output, especially if you mix Alnico 2 and 5, to give you a really full and rich sound when both are on. I noticed the sale but, unfortunately, am strapped for guitar cash right now. Otherwise, I would stock up on a few sets.

These are tremendous pickups. Clear, articultae chimey cleans and creamy overdriven tones with just the perfect amount of grit and no more. I installed them in an Ibanez artcore and the improvement in tone was phenomenal. I will try the tele Golden Age pickups next.

New Life for my Elitist SG

I installed one of these PAF-inspired pickups on my Epiphone Elitist SG and it has breathed new life into what has always been a wonderful instrument. I played the stock 50SR/60ST combination on the instrument for ten years before I made the switch and I'm amazed at how much warmer and fuller the sound is. I'm really pleased and highly recommend this pick up.

All I can say is WOW! These pickups sound amazing. I have never heard a real '57, but if they sound like these....

These are smooth and well balanced when run clean, also just the right amount of sparkle. Turn up the gain and these provide a very pleasing growl, yet very articulate.

I'll buy more of these!!

I bought these for a project guitar for the fun of it. These pups surpassed my expectations. They can sing on leads and clean up quite nicely on strumming a pretty diddy, thanks Stew

I installed a Parsons Street Alnico 2 Humbucker in the neck position of a custom solid body jazz guitar that is my main player and was stunned by the gorgeous tones and solid response. What a great choice for an all around perfect pickup!
