Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers

About This Item

Straight-up raw vintage! Closely modeled after an outstanding vintage P.A.F. set from our own collection. That sweet tone was just too good to keep to ourselves!

True vintage sound.
We christened these exceptional humbuckers in tribute to the famous Kalamazoo address where the holy grail of pickups, the legendary P.A.F. (Patent Applied For), was born.

Just like the originals, the slug coil has more windings than the polepiece coil, and both coils are unpotted. Old P.A.F.s weren't made in separate neck and bridge-position models, and their DC resistance varied from 7-9K ohms. We give you a choice: Parsons Street neck-position pickups are wound to mid 7K, and bridge-position models to low 8K.

Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers sweet vintage tone was crafted to vintage P.A.F. specifications:
• Nickel-silver cover for tone transparency
• Original 1.97" (50.04mm) polepiece spacing
• Plain enameled AWG42 coil wire
• Black paper coil tape
• Wood spacer
• Choice of Alnico 2 or Alnico 5 magnet
• Nickel-silver baseplate
• Single-conductor braided shield output wire

Your choice of original-style magnets:
• Alnico 2 for warm tone with smooth highs and a soft bottom response.
• Alnico 5 produces a clear tone with more pronounced highs and a tighter low end.
(Original P.A.F.s contained Alnico 2, 3 and 5 magnets at various times.)

Neck models: mid 7K ohms
Bridge models: low 8K ohms

Swapping pickup covers on a rare lefty Lucille

Making new pickups look old: Brand new pickups looked too shiny in this guitar that had seen a lot of gigs. So Dan Erlewine opened the old pickup and put its cover on the new one. This meant cutting the solder joint and resoldering.

Wiring a humbucker to get two sounds

Erick Coleman shows how he modified a Parsons Street Humbucker, turning it into a switchable single-coil/humbucker combination.

Love the authentic sound of these. I have them a an old PRS Tremonti SE and they sing. Here is a picture of the building for which they were named here in Kalamazoo.

Unexpected Quality

By

I purchased two of the Neck versions of the Parsons Street Humbuckers for a telecaster build.
I have a couple of GIBSON guitars with Alnico II mini-humbuckers and love the chime & tone I get for lead work at church.
My goal was to try to get a similar tone and I got something better. The PSH sound is a bit fuller with chime, and the bonus is when I use my OD pedal the depth I get is amazing, not "mini" at all.
Factor in the maple neck & fret board and you get snappy bright notes that cut through anything!

I did not want to spend the money for Gibson 57's on my 335 clone guitar so I bought these after reading all the good reviews. I have bought Gibson 57's before and must say these sound just as good to my old ear. They are not advertised as a 57 clone but they have that woody sound and response. Very pleased for the price I paid! Thank you!

New guitar for the price of a pair of pickups

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I have been trying to get a warm jazz tone out of my PRS SE Semi Hollow body. The stock neck pickup just seemed flabby, and I was concerned I was asking too much of the guitar anyway.

I was pointed to the Parsons Streets - I went back and forth deciding between A2 and A5 for the neck, but went with the "standard" A2 for the bridge and A5 for the neck. The A5 was overpowering at the recommended height so I lowered it to balance with the bridge.

And now, WOW. I have very nice tight low end at clean and slightly overdriven settings, full chords are defined, and top string notes up the neck just sing. Sounds like a whole new guitar.

This was supposed to be my #2 guitar, to play specific parts, but since installing these pups, I haven't been able to put it down.

Parsons Street Humbuckers..... unbelievable difference!

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I bought a pair (A5 neck, A2 bridge) for my Agile 3200MC. The original pickups were too dark for me.. especially the neck pickup. It was very "flabby" and "flatulent" sounding.... I actually thought that the guitar had .047uF tone caps. The first move, a 50's rewire of everything EXCEPT the pickups. Better....but did NOT do the trick.

Enter, the "Parsons Street Pair". I can't begin to describe the differences I hear. neck pickup STILL gets bottomy and deep but it is no longer that "flapping flab". It also brightens up to give the definition I like. Bridge..... bright but not "ice picky". Will go as bright as I ever need it. Middle position? All the "Page" you would ever want.

Two "thumbs up" here!

Wonderful PAF Tones

An ALNICO 2 was installed in the bridge and the ALNICO 5 in the neck of an Ibanez Artcore AS73, an ES335 clone approximately 18 months ago. Once the pickups were setup (very important) to the correct height for each string, based on my style of playing (no pick) and the string gauges used (.011-.056), I could not put the guitar down. I am inspired to play each time I pick up this instrument. The notes are now more articulate and whole chords sound wonderful. I have been a professional player since the mid 70s, and still perform a few times each week. I no longer risk bringing vintage instruments to some venues, but since installing the Parsons Street pickups in the Ibanez, this guitar has been my go to guitar for most gigs, and it works great with a Fender, Marshall, HIWATT or Dumble clone. FWIW, I select and play instruments and amps (the tools of my trade) not based on the brand name, but based on their playability, tone and articulation. The Golden Age Parsons Street pickups have definitely earned their pay, and my respect. Thank you Stew-Mac.

Always thought the 57 classic in my LP was a bit too muddy. Replaced it with these and was surprised by how much clearer the Parsons Street is.

Great Sounding PUPs

I bought these about a month ago and installed them in my epi les paul. They sound great very clear and articulate. I wish I had another guitar to change out some more pups.
