Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers

About This Item

Straight-up raw vintage! Closely modeled after an outstanding vintage P.A.F. set from our own collection. That sweet tone was just too good to keep to ourselves!

True vintage sound.
We christened these exceptional humbuckers in tribute to the famous Kalamazoo address where the holy grail of pickups, the legendary P.A.F. (Patent Applied For), was born.

Just like the originals, the slug coil has more windings than the polepiece coil, and both coils are unpotted. Old P.A.F.s weren't made in separate neck and bridge-position models, and their DC resistance varied from 7-9K ohms. We give you a choice: Parsons Street neck-position pickups are wound to mid 7K, and bridge-position models to low 8K.

Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers sweet vintage tone was crafted to vintage P.A.F. specifications:
• Nickel-silver cover for tone transparency
• Original 1.97" (50.04mm) polepiece spacing
• Plain enameled AWG42 coil wire
• Black paper coil tape
• Wood spacer
• Choice of Alnico 2 or Alnico 5 magnet
• Nickel-silver baseplate
• Single-conductor braided shield output wire

Your choice of original-style magnets:
• Alnico 2 for warm tone with smooth highs and a soft bottom response.
• Alnico 5 produces a clear tone with more pronounced highs and a tighter low end.
(Original P.A.F.s contained Alnico 2, 3 and 5 magnets at various times.)

Neck models: mid 7K ohms
Bridge models: low 8K ohms

Swapping pickup covers on a rare lefty Lucille

Making new pickups look old: Brand new pickups looked too shiny in this guitar that had seen a lot of gigs. So Dan Erlewine opened the old pickup and put its cover on the new one. This meant cutting the solder joint and resoldering.

Wiring a humbucker to get two sounds

Erick Coleman shows how he modified a Parsons Street Humbucker, turning it into a switchable single-coil/humbucker combination.

Great Sounding PUPs

I bought these about a month ago and installed them in my epi les paul. They sound great very clear and articulate. I wish I had another guitar to change out some more pups.

My PAF clone of choice

By

I have bought two sets of Parson Street Pups, one Alnico 2 set for an Epi 335 Pro and an Alnico 5 set for Vintage Guitar's Lemon Drop LP copy. Owning both sets really lets me see the similarities and differences between the magnet types.

Both of these pickups have a real great beautiful midrange that isn't muddied with too many frequencies. The lowmids have that rich crunch any Zeppellin, Free, Cream, while the sparkle in the upper mids makes these pups sing through any amp. And they clean up real well with tube amps when you role the volume down. They might not have the most emphasis on the higher frequencies but that's not where the PAF is found in my opinion.

With Gibson 57' Classic's, there is too much central mid emphasis that these tones get muddied. Seymour Seth Lovers sound real good, they have more a clarity on the upper mids but lose some of the punch the lowmids have to offer.

Now to the magnet difference. A2's definitely accentuate the lower to mid frequencies and give a real creamy punch. There's still some presence in the upper mids but not as much as A5's. The A2's also add a little more to the mid frequencies making the EQ curve a little more even. The neck is straight up Jazz on the 335; I like this tone but you'll need to adjust the polepice screw and pickup ring height to clear the potential muddy-ness in the neck. The bridge gives me the Cream Farewell concert sound through my Plexi reissue.

A5's change the spectrum completely. I agree with the site description that A5's tighten up the bass and add clarity to the highs. With Parson street, there are still the strong lower mids but the A5's put the upper mids and high frequencies on an equal playing field. I took my Vintage V100 Lemon Drop LP to Guitar Center and it round circles around a Gibson 2014 Standard. The Burstbuckers had more output but the tone I got with the Parsons was Bluesbreaker-era Clapton for days.

All in all both great pickups that I probably won't trade out again. I wish I could order black bobbin ones to play around with the cover/no cover. But I'm still a very happy camper, and so will you.

The pickups are amazing, the clear, clean tones are preferable to my playing style. Blues, hard rock you won't find a pickup this good at this piece range.
