Golden Age Humbuckers

About This Item

Vintage vibe, great price. Wake up your guitar! For authentic classic tone, Golden Age humbuckers feature Alnico 5 magnets and AWG42 coil wire just like the originals.

Inspired by legendary pickups of the '50s.
Alnico 5 magnets give that warm classic tone. AWG42 coils are wound on black or zebra bobbins, fabric-taped, mounted on a brass baseplate, and wax-potted for microphonic suppression. The output wire is 4-conductor plus ground, allowing versatile custom coil-tapping, series/parallel, and phase switching options to expand your sound.

Wiring diagrams and vintage dimensions make installation in most humbucker-equipped guitars easy.

Bridge models:9.0K ohms, 2.015" polepiece spread
Neck models:8.0K ohms, 1.97" polepiece spread

Mounting screws, springs and wiring diagrams are included.

Dimensions
Length2.75"(69.85mm)
Width1.5"(38.10mm)
Height.840"(21.34mm)including mounting tabs

Looking for hotter output with more powerful midrange? Check out Golden Age Overwound Humbuckers.

TIP: Handy Humbucker Helpers make installation a whole lot easier.

Color-matching Cream Parts and Bindings
There have always been slight variations in the color of the cream plastic parts used on Gibson and other guitars. It's not uncommon to see brand new and vintage guitars with bindings, pickup rings, toggle switch rings and pickguards that don't perfectly match in color. We do our best to match all our cream products, but there's no absolute control from batch to batch, or from supplier to supplier.

Still the best bang for your buck in replacement pickups

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I have used Golden Age humbuckers in a few guitars over the years and I think they are great. I wrote a review years ago stating that they are the best bang for the buck in replacement pickups – and I still feel that way. I’ve had a pair of first generation (2-wire + shield) Golden Age humbuckers in in a salvaged 90-something Ibanez AX320 of mine for quite some time. When I rebuilt this guitar, I wired it up using the Peavey T-60 wiring scheme. I always liked the way a Peavey T-60 split the pickups using the tone control sweep. One function of the T-60 that I did not add to this guitar was the phase switch. The only reason I didn’t add that function was because you needed at least one of your pickups to be 4-wire – but the Golden Age pickups were not 4-wire back then. I recently discovered that they are now 4-wire, so I bought a neck pickup and a push/pull pot to add that function. I was totally delighted with this guitar before. I am even more delighted with the guitar now. I gigged with it reasonably often before. I gig with it more often now. I still wish Stewmac would offer Golden Age humbuckers with chrome covers though. The only reason I give them only four of five stars is because they are still not available with chrome covers.

GA Neck Alnico V

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I'm a 45+year pro player and a 40+year pro guitar tech.
Not all pickups sound good in every guitar. They should be chosen (in great part) with consideration for the woods the instrument is made from, the style of music to be performed on the guitar and the type of amp the guitar will usually be played through.
I installed the GA A5 in the neck position in my Epi ES-339. While at it, I changed the pots to CTS, the switch & jack to a Switchcraft, replaced the bridge with a Gotoh Nashville, the stop bar & studs to a Gotoh zinc model, added a bone nut and installed Grover 102 Rotomatics.
The GA A5 opened up the instrument. It's clear, has a super broad & balanced frequency response and is silent in operation.
It interfaces well with pedals.
Hows it sound? Like a beefy SD Jazz neck at 1/3rd the price. Tight lows, sparkling non-irritating highs and a balanced midrange.
Construction is excellent.
It mates well with my thinline and blends perfectly with the GA Hot A5 I installed in the bridge.
I hope you try one & have similar success. Good stuff!!!!!!!!
