Golden Age Alnico 5 Single-coil Pickups

About This Item

Vintage vibe, great price. Wake up your guitar! Inspired by legendary pickups of the '50s, Golden Age single-coil pickups bring out the best in your guitar.

The reviews say it all: "they really, really sing...great buy for the price." Wax-potted AWG42 coil windings and Alnico 5 staggered polepieces deliver vintage tone, optimum output at each position, balanced string response, and microphonic suppression. They're the real deal, for a lot less money.

Looking for extra punch? Our #5423 HOT model is specially wound to 7.6K ohms, for the bridge or neck position.

Bonus! Two covers (one black and one white) are supplied with each Golden Age single-coil pickup, for easy pickguard matching.

Golden Age single-coil pickups have vintage dimensions for easy installation in standard bodies, and two vintage-style fabric-insulated hookup wires. Polepieces have 2-1/16" spread. Mounting screws, rubber tubing and wiring diagrams are included.

The middle-position pickup is reverse wound, reverse polarity, for hum cancellation at the #2 and #4 switch positions.

Note: Each pickup has a copper shield surrounding the coil, a modern feature for 60-cycle hum suppression not found on vintage pickups. To play "naked" vintage-style, simply snip the small jumper wire that connects the foil to the pickup's ground lug.

Great sound for the money

Great vintage tone at a great price. I could, however, do without the "vintage" leads with cloth insulation - they are more difficult to strip than modern insulated wire and they do nothing for the tone.

Excellent

I put one of these in the bridge position of a two single coil pickup guitar and it sounds fantastic. I won't go into all the highs lows mids speech, but it sounds excellent throughout the ranges. Beautifully balanced and not shrill at all like some single coils. Balances well with the stewmac lipstick in the neck position, which means great funky sounds in the middle. Not been disappointed with any golden age pickups. Will try the p90 next.

Very good Strat tone!

Classic Strat tone, not too vintage nor modern. Perfect match with GoldenAge overwound humbucker in bridge position. Plenty of midrange, singing highs, focused and powerful bass. Not muddy at all. Target hit!

Boutique sound without the $$$

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I put these StewMac pups in a G&L S-500 that I had converted to a straight Strat setup. A new pick guard, RS Guitar Works vintage Strat pre-wired pots with a 3-way switch, and one each "Golden Age" 5420, 5421, and 5423 single coils. I live in Los Angeles and I'm lucky enough to be in close proximity to some of the best guitar techs on the planet. The guy who did the set-up and installed these (when he's not on the road) is the touring guitar tech for a multiple platinum Grammy Award winning recording artist. He was impressed enough that he intended to mention these pups as an option for "his guy". He said: "Very Stratty, nails the vintage tone and hot...I can't believe how quiet they are..." His only dink was he thought the lead wires could be of better quality as they were difficult for him to solder because of the aluminum content. That's it...you can pay more and wait two months for your boutique pups, or you can have these in your mailbox in about a week.

Pickup sounds good, but...

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I bought the Pickup to make my custom Tele into the Nashville variety. I wanted the option of a Strat sound, since I'm mostly a rhythm player and the bridge and neck combined weren't doing it for me. I bought at Stewmac mostly for one stop shopping. Alone, the pup sounds close to my American Strat with fat 50's ; no complaints there.
The problem was the pickup was missing the tapped holes for mounting. One side had an undersized hole and the other side none at all. I drilled out for 6-32 and tapped them myself. I'm a toolmaker by trade so it wasn't a huge deal for me, but the process might be daunting for some. Also the pup comes with flat head screws which make them protrude - should be a round head with a square underside shoulder.

I played these on an ash strat body w maple/rosewood neck, through a twin reverb amp.
What a marvellous single-coil sound. All the guys in the band were astonished. Thumbs up.

Desde Argentina -EXCELLENT PRODUCT-

By
(Customer's Reviews)

Saluda cordialmente.

While in Argentina have excellent manufacturers of microphones, when recommending a particular sound , do not hesitate to do with the Golden Age. Having had excellent results in both guitars and basses, in this opportunity I put a game ( 5420/5421/5422 ) in Mexico Fender '90 / 91 and as always the customer more than happy .
I appreciate the quality of these microphones , which help give the client an excellent final product .
Sincerely .

Lacking output on high e and B strings

By

Put a set (5420/21/22) into an overhaul of a Mexican Fat Strat in summer 2012, wired with S-1 switch similar to American Deluxe strat wiring. Was going for 'vintage' rather than fat sound. Frustrated because although the guitar sounds great and balanced when strummed acoustically, amplified signal on any of the pickups sounds fine on low E, A, D, G strings, but the two top strings (B, e) are just not balanced in volume, substantially more quiet. I've tried all I can with PUP height, etc. Same issue into Silverface Deluxe, Classic 30, or Valve Jr. amp. Have no issues with my other guitars (tele thinline, PRS SE, Gibson L6-S), so I put this on the pickups. Pretty disappointed. Any ideas how to bump the output on these strings (fixed staggered pole pieces)?

Very Happy with the Alnico 5 Hot in the neck position. Clean and then edgy too..
