For Mastertone banjos. Includes a built-in preamp.

Rare Earth™ polepiece magnet responds to banjo head vibrations via a thin steel "inductor" placed beneath the banjo bridge. This is a proven design for a natural sound. Fishman Banjo pickup

Installed the pickup on a Deering Saratoga Star but the box did not include any installation instructions. You can find them online at the Fishman website. You need some skill to install the wiring since the wires need to be soldered to the line in hardware. With great care and some skills, the installation worked fine. In the absence of a soldering iron & necessary know how let a luthier do it. Plugged it in and it worked fine. I use it for recording into a DWS, and the recording quality was right on. There is no volume control, or other controls for the sound. The wiring was the only issue and better installation instructions would help there.

The Pickup itself is easy enough to install and the sound is very satisfying. The big BUT is: The Jacksocket installment kit doesn't work with open back banjos. I had to HEAVILY improvise there. But at the end of the day it was worth the extra effort.

Best pick by far for the banjo however...I do all my own work on my instruments... it's pretty advanced to put together but it lasts. And speaking of lasting I've only changed the battery twice after about three years of it being in there and that's a lot of play time. As for the metal shim that sticks to the head I had to have someone order me a new one to stick to it because I had to get a new head (my old head snapped) but anyhow this is a good pick up
