Pickup Coil Tape

About This Item

Build or repair pickups with these authentic '50s parts! Pickup Coil Tape is used to wrap and protect humbucker and single-coil pickups.

5951 Black paper "flat-back" tape, 1/4" wide x 65-feet long.
Used to wrap humbucker bobbins after winding. Also used to cover solder joints of lead wires.

5952 Black cloth tape, 3/8" wide x 65-feet long.
Ideal for wrapping a humbucker after it's been assembled to protect the bobbins. Can also be used with single-coil pickups to protect the windings however, this is not "vintage".

Example: Use conductive foil wrapped around the windings to reduce 60-cycle hum. Wrap the coil with tape, then wrap the #0036 1/4" Conductive Copper Tape over the tape and connect to ground.

It's a Wrap!!

Does exactly what Stew Mac says it does - and that's one of my favorite things about this company - the people who sell the product actually use them extensively. The tape is very easy to work with and handle - holds very securely - but also peels off the hair thin pickup wire no problem so that when you need to re-position the tape - it is easy to do so without damaging the coil. For this reason - I also use this tape for holding my start wire to the spindle when winding my humbuckers. It's a slightly more expensive solution that using plain old masking tape for the same purpose - but to be honest - the peace of mind it gives you when you are winding is worth every penny

Future use!

I have a tenancy to get my strings stuck under my humbucker top when I get playing a little heavier than usual. I plan On taking this tape and adding a couple small strips on the treble sides of my humbuckers covering the coils for a little extra protection! This tape will look un modified to the pickup yet give more protection to the coils!! Just a thought for the guys who occasionally pop coils that way ;-)

Wonderful for new work

I really like how there is some "working time" in the adhesive, so you can adjust the wrap on days where you may have had too much coffee. This stuff is made of a nice fabric ribbon, so it molds to shape around bobbin flanges and nicely covers the exit wire. After adjusting and press-fitting the tape, it stays put with little to no creep back to original shape. That's great! After sitting for a little while, you can be sure it is going to stay there. I will be interested in seeing how well it can be removed after a couple year's of use in the instrument.

I have used string, painters tape cloth surgical tape, but nothing works as well or looks as professional as Stew-Mac's Pickup Coil Tape. It is easy to work with, protects the coil and just plain looks great on a finished pickup. I prefer the black cloth. My pickups are not finished without it. I also pot my pickups with the tape on the pickup, no problems. Thanks Stew-Mac, all your products are top shelf.
