Poly-coated Pickup Coil Wire

Poly-coated wire is the modern standard; consistent coating gives a cleaner, more uniform sound in similar pickups with the same number of windings.

Each 1/2-pound roll has over 25,000 feet of wire, enough to wind 5-6 single-coil pickups, or 2-3 humbuckers.

"On most pickups, I use poly-coated coil wire for its consistency, durability and overall clear sound."
—Erick Coleman, repairman and StewMac tech advisor

42 AWG (American Wire Gauge) is the standard wire used in humbuckers, Strat® pickups, and Tele® bridge pickups.

43 AWG is used at the Tele neck position and in Rickenbacker pickups. 43-gauge wire requires fewer windings to attain a desired coil resistance.

An emergency pickup transplant for Skeletonwitch

Erick Coleman gets an urgent call on a Friday night: the Heavy Metal band Skeletonwitch needs some custom pickup work in time to head to Ozzfest in 24 hours!

1966 Telecaster pickup torn down and rewound

Erick Coleman has a 47-year-old pickup that's nearly dead: It's making a little bit of sound, but not much. Erick opens it up to find the trouble, and we get a good view of the guts of this vintage Fender pickup before he rewinds it.

Really Nice Coil Wire By Shatten Design

By
(Customer's Reviews)

If this will be your first DIY pickup wind, do yourself a favor and unless you have precision hands, a lot of patience, and/or a winding machine with a nice stepper motor, start with the 42 AWG wire. The 43 is like winding hair.

Magnetic coil wire

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I have both 42 and 43 awg wire, but have only used the 42, so far. I have wound one single coil bridge pickup and 3 single coil neck pickups, plus 2 mess ups that had to be disassembled. I am sure there is enough wire for another single coil. The bridge coil showed 8.9K ohms. It has bark and bite. The neck coils wound with 42 sound really good and range from 3K ohm to 5.2K ohm. All of the neck coils will be wound with 43 awg hereafter. Thanks Stew-Mac, for the quality in all of your products.
