Golden Age Treble Bleed Circuit

About This Item

An easy mod for your volume control to get more uniform guitar tone from 1 to 10.

Hand-soldered here in our shop: a 150K-ohm 1/4-watt resistor (1% tolerance) in parallel with a .001uF capacitor. Wire this simple mod between the input and output lugs of your guitar volume control pot, to smooth out treble bleed. Get more uniform tone from 1 to 10, and a more rounded sound at low volume. Available with ceramic or Orange Drop® capacitor.

Hear the difference in TradeSecrets Issue 182.

Due to the small size of the resistor, we recommend using Alligator Clip Heat Sinks when soldering this circuit in place.

For modding original caps, see our 150K-ohm 1/4-watt Resistor.

Haven't installed it yet, but have no doubt it will do what it's supposed to.

New parts, old tone.

I ended up pulling this out of my Pacifica. I quit using the tone control until I replaced it with a Stellartone.

Works great!

I have always been bummed when I turned down my volume on my Strat and that sparkle just went away. Well with this simple mod it has made a huge difference on the highs that are still there at a low volume. I also did the mod for the tone knob for the bridge pickup so I have even more tones now!

Easy install

I'm not sure how much treble it bleeds off but it certainly makes the volume control smoother and more effective. Actually it seems to bleed off all frequencies but just crank the amp up and you get the desired result. I'm pleased with the product even though treble bleed may be a bit of a misnomer. I possibly should have gotten the larger capacitor but I didn't have room. No complaints. I have a St. Blues hybred tele / strat 3 pickups with tele controls. One volume one tone and it is hot on the treble side. I was trying to tame that as much as possible with as little work as possible so I can't blame the product. It works as stated although I somewhat missinderstood its purpose. I'm pleased and would do it again.

Haven't installed as of yet, bought it as an add on to have on hand.. However these simple circuits are great if you guitars dulling out with the volume down.

Very easy mod for any guitar. Same great tone through the whole range of the volume pot.

A very noticeable difference!

I did this very simple modification on a Tele with noiseless pickups and the difference was really a nice surprise. Now, when I'm practicing with the volume low, I don't get a muddy high frequency. The sound is nice and crisp. I highly recommend this,
Because of the limited space in the control cavity, I just trimmed a little of the long contact wires, covered what I could with shrink wrap (using alligator clips when I used any heat) and coated the remaining bare wire between the resistor and the cap with a couple of coats of quality liquid tape. With the unit in the vicinity of so many other contacts and the grounded tone control, I wanted to hedge my bet against a short. Next is my Strat and especially my Les Paul. Thanks Stew Mac for the really nice (and inexpensive) little invention!

Wonderful to be able to reduce volume without losing treble.
