Golden Age Treble Bleed Circuit

About This Item

An easy mod for your volume control to get more uniform guitar tone from 1 to 10.

Hand-soldered here in our shop: a 150K-ohm 1/4-watt resistor (1% tolerance) in parallel with a .001uF capacitor. Wire this simple mod between the input and output lugs of your guitar volume control pot, to smooth out treble bleed. Get more uniform tone from 1 to 10, and a more rounded sound at low volume. Available with ceramic or Orange Drop® capacitor.

Hear the difference in TradeSecrets Issue 182.

Due to the small size of the resistor, we recommend using Alligator Clip Heat Sinks when soldering this circuit in place.

For modding original caps, see our #7373 150K-ohm 1/4-watt Resistor.

Wish I had done this a long time ago.

I have a late 90's American Lonestar Strat. My volume knob was almost useless. From 10-8 was ok, 8-5 got muddy and below 5 was terrible. Read all about the different treble bleed mods and decided I would try this one with all the great reviews. The mod took about 10 minutes and that was mostly removing the strings/pick guard and putting it back together.

I'm truly blown away with the results. I get steady reduction in volume from 10-2.5 with almost no loss in tone. It was instantly noticeable for me. My volume knob works exactly how I would expect now. My only gripe is I wish I had done this 18+ years ago when I bought the guitar. For such a low cost to have such an impact I am really impressed.

Hooked!

This works so good I'm buying a bunch and they will go into every ax I own. The only guitars that I don't need to put it in are 2 Custom Shop/Historic LPs as it or an equivalent is already in there, in fact, it's what gave me the idea to try this. I was using a volume pedal to avoid tone loss and now I don't have to, it's at my fingertips.

Excellent!

I soldered alligator clips so i could try it on several guitars. I have a old Peavey Wolfgang with 2 new EVH humbuckers and a EVH low friction 500k volume pot. Noticed a tighter response on 10. Excellent response all the way down to about 2-1 where it finally bled off. With this installed, Im getting the respose on 3-4 where I used to have the volume at 7-8 or even 9. Will be buying more. Comes with plenty to trim off if needed.

Incredible Difference!

By

I was very close to swapping out my stock pickups on a new HSS Elite and decided to give this a try instead. I've never had a treble circuit before and I'm absolutely blown away by the difference this made. My pups came back to life and my tone knobs are actually useful. I would say that this circuit is almost essential for Strats as I find they flatten out very fast as that volume knob goes down. I've got that glassy quack at any volume now, and can still dial in that darker/flatter sound by using my tone knobs. What a huge upgrade for five bucks and change!

Not proper English, I know, but great tone throughout the volume sweep....oh yeah.

Great electric guitar mod!!

Never heard of a treble bleed before seeing it in the latest StewMac catalog. I purchased one for my Strat and it works wonderfully. I can roll back on the volume and still have a full, clear tone. It's easy to install and well worth the cost and little effort to solder in. All my electric guitars will have treble bleed circuits from now on!

Treble Bleed Circuit Works as Advertised

By

I installed this on my Tele and it worked as advertised. As I decrease the volume, the treble does not bleed away as it did before this was installed. Installation was relatively simple. Watch the video, pre-plan where it will be, solder it in. I wrapped some electrical tape around the exposed wires to reduce the possibility of issues if the wires ever touched something they were not supposed to touch.

I put this on my non-pedal steel guitar. I notice some difference in tone. Was not as much as i would have liked. Was simple to install. Over all ok.

I didn't think this circuit would make a big difference but it sure did when I installed it in one of my friend's guitar. It did exactly what it was advertised to do.

I could not get the orange drop to work right. The golden age knocked it out of the park.
