Emerson Paper-In-Oil Caps

Period-correct specs, warm tone. Genuine handmade tone caps, hand-picked by our friend Mitch Ingram at Emerson Custom Guitars and Electronics.

New old stock paper-in-oil caps from the former Soviet Union are prized by aficionados for their period-correct specs and subtle warm tone quality. Sold individually.

Capacitors are energy-storage devices that filter the high frequencies. A cap lets the tone control roll off the treble response, progressively warming the tone. The higher the value, the more bass output from the tone control at its "zero" setting.

A cap wired to a potentiometer creates a standard tone control, as explained in this article: How a tone control works

Value Common use
.015uF - 200V   With neck position humbucker for the Clapton "woman tone"
.022uF - 200V Humbucker tone
.033uF - 200V Versatile all-around cap, for single-coil or humbucker guitars
.047uF - 200V Single-coil guitars, many basses
.100uF - 200V Basses and certain eras of vintage Fender guitars

Emerson P-I-O caps

Great paper in oil caps. They are not the be-all, end-all of caps, as one may prefer the sound and feel created by orange drops or ceramic caps better, (depending their own set up), but as far as PIO these are great.

Got a .047 uf paper in oil Cap soldered in to this tele set up. Tight fit but looks nice. How can you pass up 'old school'? Cant wait to crank it up with some overwound golden age nickel hum buckers and the .001 uf treble bypass..... 5 Stars I'm hopin... still building...

Yes, capacitors make a difference!

I put one of these in a terrific Fender Japan Telecaster and the tone comes through in spades. Telecasters are bright by nature, but that high end can quickly become an ice pick to the ear drums with cheap components. Dialing back the tone on a Tele often means sacrificing tone. Not with these Emerson caps. Even full out, the tone sparkles but never gets harsh. Rolling back the tone control only sweetens the tone; clarity is maintained through the whole sweep range, and even the "zero" setting has a lovely, wooly quality to it. Simply put, these are among the most musical capacitors you can use, and considering the outrageous prices fetched by some of the uber-boutique caps out there, these are a bargain. Buy them. Install them. Make the best music of your life.
