“Starting with one of these slotted nuts saves me about an hour per job. And they're unbleached bone, my favorite for tone.”
—Erick Coleman, StewMac tech advisor

Stewart-MacDonald is your source for quality bone!
You already know bone nuts sound better than plastic. Good news: our vintage-look unbleached bone nuts are now available pre-slotted! It's easier than ever to install a perfect, super-hard nut. That's a huge time savings—especially in professional repair shops.

The slots are proportionally-spaced, using the same method as our String Spacing Rule. This means the strings feel right all across the neck—no crowding on the heavier bass strings.

These beautifully shaped nuts are StewMac exclusives, with research and design by our repair experts. Final fitting is all you'll need to do.

unbleached bone nut

By

Re my previous review on the unbleached bone nut; I managed to bleach the nut and got rid of this orange processed-cheese-like color. Now it looks very vintage, and again, technically, is made very well, but because I had to do something, cannot give more than 4 stars.

unbleached bone nut

I purchased an unbleached bone nut and received some disgusting orange-like one that I will never put on my old Gibson. The color you see in the images has nothing to do with what you think will receive. Technically, it's made very well.

Excellent customer service

The first slotted unbleached bone nut arrived with a slight defect. When I contacted SM customer service a replacement was sent immediately with no questions asked. Very little filing and polishing was necessary and I had a practice nut to prefect my technique! The customer service was fantastic!!

Great quality!

Installed one of these on a Gibson Les Paul. Spacing was great and depths of slots were close. Final precision filing of nut slots is a must though. Quality is terrific and buffs to a very nice gloss!

Best nut ever

Great density, great consistency, great appearance, great tone. Used this product to replace a synthetic ivory nut on my '98 HD-28 VR. Improved tone, depth, & volume tremendously. A friend was ready to trade his D-16, but now loves it after I replaced both nut & saddle with your unbleached bone. I don't need to look any further for nut/saddle material. Thanks for the wonderful quality.

these nuts are fantastic

By
(Customer's Reviews)

these pre-slotted nuts make it possible for even a non-luthier like me to replace a damaged or broken nut. the first one i used was on a Gibson SG that i bought used that had a broken nut, and i just put one on a used Strat that also came with a chipped nut. you just have to do a little homework if you've never installed a nut previously. Dan Erlewine's dvd Nut Making Step-By-Step is a fantastic resource for the beginner.

Tough job made easy!

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I'm not a Luthier but have been able to do quality set-ups on all of my own guitars for years including making new nuts from stock blanks. Making new nuts from blanks has always been something that I dreaded doing because all the shaping was done by hand do to not having a belt sander. Just replaced the nut on one of my acoustics with a 6025-VS from Stew-Mac and was so easy that I enjoyed it. I will use nothing else from now on. Love the string spacing.

Too Short

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I purchased two of the Gibson nuts and tried to install them on both a Les Paul Traditional and Les Paul Standard. In both cases, this nut was not tall enough. Quality is very good, but I can't imagine these fitting any modern Les Paul. StewMac needs to make them taller to fit a wider range of guitars.

No "bones" about it.....

I have used this product in both Gibson and Fender repairs. The tone and the tuning stability are far better than the stock nut that comes standard. Worth the price for improved tone and performance.
