“Starting with one of these slotted nuts saves me about an hour per job. And they're unbleached bone, my favorite for tone.”
—Erick Coleman, StewMac tech advisor

Stewart-MacDonald is your source for quality bone!
You already know bone nuts sound better than plastic. Good news: our vintage-look unbleached bone nuts are now available pre-slotted! It's easier than ever to install a perfect, super-hard nut. That's a huge time savings—especially in professional repair shops.

The slots are proportionally-spaced, using the same method as our String Spacing Rule. This means the strings feel right all across the neck—no crowding on the heavier bass strings.

These beautifully shaped nuts are StewMac exclusives, with research and design by our repair experts. Final fitting is all you'll need to do.

Improved tuning stability many folds!

By
(Customer's Reviews)

Replaced the nut on a Puresalem guitar.
I manually sanded the bottom of the nut for the correct height and the sides to make it flush with the neck. Then I glued it on with a bit of super glue (10). The result was impressive. The tuning stability is incredibly improved compared to the cheap plastic (?) nut that was there before.

Fantastic upgrade for Epiphone

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I got one of the Gibson nuts to replace the hollow plastic one that came with my Ephiphone ES-295, which never had returned my strings to tune when I used the Bigsby. Installation was a snap, requiring only a little sanding of the ends to make them even with the edges of the fingerboard. Tuning has been stable ever since. Best $15 I ever spent!

I MISS BONE

By

Seems like all I get to work with these days is Graph Tech. I just installed an 1-11/16" unbleached slotted nut with slanted sides on my 1999 Martin Dread. Went on great, looks great, tastes great, and even smells great. Thanks StewMac.

Shape Pre Slotted Gibson Bone Nut, 1-11/16

By
(Customer's Reviews)

Bought new unbleached nut for old Gibson LP Studio to finally replace the plastic nut. I knew I would have to work the nut to make it fit the way I wished. The nut was perfect with the exceptions of It was a tiny bit to wide and the slots were to deep for my light strings. Filed both ends to trim the width slightly and filed the top down to make the slots not so deep. It was a very easy job with a little tech help from StewMac. Looks great, very happy with the new sound and the way it turned out. Thanks again for the great service and parts.

I'll be getting more of these

By
(Customer's Reviews)

This worked well on my Gibson J45…I didn't even have to reduce the width, all I had to do was slot it, and file down the top. This is the first time I used unbleached bone, and it does seem that the strings ride more smoothly through it than regular bone, because it's harder.
And of note: the slots that come on the nut are so shallow that you can't slightly tighten the strings and rest them in the slots to start with - they'll pop right out…not a problem, but the work might go a bit faster if the slots were deeper to begin with…on the other hand, if you plan to move the spacing of the slots, than the shallowness is a plus

Beware...

This item is not finished. It needs reshaping to fit your guitar, which probably means extra expense with a luthier... This should be made clearer by Stewmac.

unbleached bone nut

Re my previous review on the unbleached bone nut; I managed to bleach the nut and got rid of this orange processed-cheese-like color. Now it looks very vintage, and again, technically, is made very well, but because I had to do something, cannot give more than 4 stars.

I purchased an unbleached bone nut and received some disgusting orange-like one that I will never put on my old Gibson. The color you see in the images has nothing to do with what you think will receive. Technically, it's made very well.

Excellent customer service

The first slotted unbleached bone nut arrived with a slight defect. When I contacted SM customer service a replacement was sent immediately with no questions asked. Very little filing and polishing was necessary and I had a practice nut to prefect my technique! The customer service was fantastic!!

Great quality!

By

Installed one of these on a Gibson Les Paul. Spacing was great and depths of slots were close. Final precision filing of nut slots is a must though. Quality is terrific and buffs to a very nice gloss!
