Micarta Saddle, 1/8" blank

About This Item

Softer than bone, and files easily. Micarta is an excellent synthetic bone substitute.

Specified by Martin for nuts and saddles since the 1960s. Ivory in color and a bit softer than bone, it files and sands easily and gives a uniform tone. Its uniform density is ideal for use with undersaddle transducer pickups. Each blank has a flat bottom surface; shaping and slotting required.

4-1/8" x 15/32" x 1/8"

Micarta is a fine material

(Customer's Reviews)

I was servicing an old 1975 OMI Dobro. The owner resides at the beach where the old wooden saddles had been affected by the moisture and had become sot and unresponsive, causing some of the strings to muffle. I replaced the saddles with micarta which not only cleared up the clarity issue, but made the sound more crisp. Micarta is easier to work with than bone but does seem to have a similar tonal response characteristic. Have done several bridges and the Dobro was a challenge, but a successful one because of the two saddles on the spider. One trick I did find was to make sure to lightly file the string groove almost parallel to the saddle to get rid of any micro-burrs before stringing it, and be careful to cut the grooves less than you might for bone or the maple. The tone really improves and it is not sensitive to moisture.

My first choice.

I've 'switched out' tested self-made saddles of bone, TUSQ, and micarta, and the micarta has dependably given me the best balance across the strings. TUSQ shines through the trebles, but lacks micarta's definition in the basses. Bone has performed well, though, sometimes it lacks consistency from string to string. Unlike the other two, micarta can bind when sawing.

What a difference a nut makes

(Customer's Reviews)

Curious as to how much difference a saddle makes, I used a Micarta saddle to replace the broken original plastic one on an old Silvertone acoustic. I didn't think it was worth all the extra work of making a saddle for this guitar...until I played it. Very dramatic improvement in tone.
