Stewart-MacDonald is your source for quality bone!
Bone's hardness and density contributes to good tone, it polishes well, and it allows more precise filing. Bone is traditionally preferred for making nuts and saddles on quality instruments.

Shaped saddles will save you a LOT of work—a head start for the novice, and a timesaver for the busy shop. The sizes have been carefully researched, and accurately radiused, so that minor trimming, slotting, and sanding are usually all you'll need to do.

Blank saddles have oversize length and height, for custom shaping in your shop. They're ready for trimming, filing, sanding and slotting.

New saddle makes the guitar sound much better

By

Verified Buyer

I am not a luthier, but a custom knifemaker, yet recently I bought an inexpensive Ventura guitar which had a plastic saddle, .005" undersize so it was a sloppy fit in the slot. The sound was ok but I wanted more. I bought the blank bone saddle, measured the slot length and width, lowered the action by another .010", duplicated the radius and installed it. The sound was much better. Thanks to Dan for the Trade Secret tips on other saddle related work although I couldn't find one on actually replacing a saddle. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants better sound in their instrument. Next, I will replace the nut. Thanks for a great product.

I bought these saddles because the saddle in my old yamaha was a sloppy fit in the bridge slot. I sanded one to fit tightly and replace the sloppy fitting original saddle that was not sitting squarely in the slot. I used a stationary belt sander to get the thickness close, then micro adjusted the fit by stroking the bone saddle on 100 grit paper over a flat surface. It greatly improved the fit of the saddle which now sits squarely in the bridge slot. I may experiment with lowering the saddle height even more to lower the action further. If I go too far and create a "buzz" by lowering the action too much, I have already purchased the second saddle so I can start over again. I'm hoping to get the best sound possible where the action is as low as it can be from a somewhat mediochre guitar.

Oversized is a Gibson Saver!

The oversized bridge blank allowed me to cut, shape and replace 2 large nuts on 2 newer Gibson electrics for a customer who did not like the titanium or brass alloy nuts that accompanied the self-tuning system. "Scrape the metal nut, replace w bone!" Done x 2!

Over size bone saddle

I found a mandolin in a gauge sale, needed some TLC. So I changed the nut and saddle to bone. Also if your looking to make the bone antic looking, get some( tan boot die), looks like old Ivory .
By changing to bone makes a big difference in tone. Gene

Good Solid Bone

I have an 810 Taylor with an oversized saddle slot and decided that unless I wanted another cracked bridge that I needed to make a thicker saddle or shim it, shimming being something I did not want to do. I am now in the process of re-humidifying the guitar as this is part of the problem in that the bridge will no doubt change the dimensions of the saddle slot as the guitar humidity reaches the proper level. I doubt that it will change sufficiently to accommodate the old bridge as it was returned to me from warranty repair to replace a cracked bridge with an oversize slot. I have fit many saddles and the Stewart Mac oversize blank will no doubt work well as it has before in similar applications. If I can find a fossilized ivory blank at some future date, I will probably replace the bone saddle, but until then the bone will serve very well. Before any of you replace what appears to be an undersized saddle, make sure your instrument is properly humidified, it may need no more than a few days with a proper guitar humidifier. My saddle slot will have to be adjusted due to the old saddle leaning at the top and altering the dimensions of the slot, at least I am anticipating this development. I will wait another few days and then check dimensions. This high quality bone from Stewart Mac will be ready to fit exactly once the saddle slot is stabilized. It is much more available than Ivory or Fossilized Ivory, less expensive, and is just as easy to fit. The sound is nearly as good as Ivory and a whole lot less expensive. Fitting the new bone saddle will allow me to evaluate the fix, play the instrument and decide if I want to invest the money for Ivory or not. When the material is as good quality as these oversize bone saddle blanks, it is a matter of taste as to which material gives the best sound, Bone or Ivory. You can buy this blank with confidence that the material is, clean, and cut to a true oversized rectangular blank as described.
