Bone's hardness and density contributes to good tone, it polishes well, and it allows more precise slot filing.

Stewart-MacDonald is your source for quality bone!
Bone is traditionally preferred for making nuts and saddles on quality instruments.

Blank nuts have oversize length and height, for custom shaping in your shop. They're ready for trimming, filing, sanding and slotting.

Preshaped nuts will save you a LOT of work — a head start for the novice builder, and a bonus for the busy repair shop where time is money! The dimensions have been carefully researched, and minor trimming, slotting, and sanding are all that's needed to fit most popular guitars.

By

Verified Buyer

Perfect in size, shape, and quality. I've been in the stringed instrument repair business for nearly 50 years and have been using Stew-Mac nuts (and saddles) for a long time. I have never found any better. Stew-Mac's service is great too.

Martin precut nut

By

Verified Buyer

These precut nuts are a great time saver. But sometimes the spacing is a little off. Had that problem on a Martin D-!. No fault of the nut the fret board just have more fall off on the edge. But the nuts are so beefy I could cut down and still re-slot a little narrower. Thanks Stew-Mac

Works great

Very consitstent and not to soft. Easy to work on with a few files and pieces of sandpaper.
Bought a cheaper prepared one from another shop that didn't work out beacause it wasn't high enough. 3h of work with the blank fender nut and the guitar was finished.

These are perfect...except.

By

Verified Buyer

...except I wish they would come in the same size as the nut slotting files....they are slightly bigger and you have to spend time grinding them down to get them to fit into the slot. Had they just made them the exact same size as the files, life as a luthier would be so much easier. How many of us have screwed up the fit trying to match it into the slot? I would hate to think this was a marketing strategy to boost up sales based on nut slotting mistakes? Also, I cannot understand why the unbleached ones are more expensive than the bleached. You'd think that the extra step for bleaching would incur more manufacturing costs? Anyway...these are very good once you get them fitted.

Pre-shaped Bone Nut for Martin Classical - good for bass, too!

By

Verified Buyer

I used this pre-shaped, uncut bone nut to replace the plastic nut on an Epiphone bass. it only needed to be thinned to fit the existing slot, trimmed to length, and cut the nut for the strings. Polished up very nice, too.
