Bone's hardness and density contributes to good tone, it polishes well, and it allows more precise slot filing.

Stewart-MacDonald is your source for quality bone!
Bone is traditionally preferred for making nuts and saddles on quality instruments.

Blank nuts have oversize length and height, for custom shaping in your shop. They're ready for trimming, filing, sanding and slotting.

Preshaped nuts will save you a LOT of work — a head start for the novice builder, and a bonus for the busy repair shop where time is money! The dimensions have been carefully researched, and minor trimming, slotting, and sanding are all that's needed to fit most popular guitars.

Bone is bone and gives good tone; however, I wanted to try the Tusq product. The people at Tusq offer a pre-slotted nut for ukes, but the shipping cost is too high. Come on, Stew-Mac, people are going crazy for ukuleles these days. Please consider stocking more uke parts.

I have been buying them for some years now, always have been consistent in color and quality. No chips on them or any real defect. Have used them for different scale lengths including bass and acoustics.

Making a nut

I found these white bone nuts very useful. They are hard enough to transfer string vibration but yet are very toolable. Can be finished to your liking from dull to a nice shine.

Quality and Service

By Errol from Brisbane Aust
(Customer's Reviews) Sunday, December 05, 2010

Although this is the first time i have purchased items over the internet, i have been dealing with StewMac via fax for over 10 years. During this time i have purchased bone nuts, saddles, various frets, tuning keys, pearl and abalone dots and purflings, pickups for electric and acoustic guitars, strings, fret files, wiring kits and many other smaller items i have trouble remembering.

The quality and service i experienced over all this time is outstanding. The web shop and your magazine are very easy to use and understand. If it were not for Stewmac the two dozen instruments i have managed to make (Acoustic bass, 3 acoustic 6 strings a 12 string, 2 telecasters, 1 les paul, mandolins, dulcimers, mandolas, bazouki, and a lap steel) would never have been attempted. Thank you Stewmac for enabling me to enjoy this hobby over many years. Regards Errol

This is a great product

I ordered a new bone nut for my acoustic and my Telecaster. I improved the action and the tone on both guitars. This is an inexpensive way to improve a budget guitar. Here is a suggestion... Purchase the nut file set with the nut. It makes the job very easy.

nuts for my cigar box guitar!

I bought some blank ones. If I posted a picture, you would see I am very much an amateur, but these worked pretty well. I think the bone comes from decapitated radioactive zombies because they are very strong and powerful.
