A hands-on course in guitar making.
We include full-size plans drawn by Don MacRostie, who designed our kits based on prized vintage Martins. The kits are adapted for the small shop so you won't need factory tools. We do the precision machine work, so you can hand build a great guitar.

We include illustrated assembly instructions and DVD, Building an Acoustic Guitar Kit! This DVD demonstrates the process in a way that would take a book to fully describe — and you can see what you'll be doing before you do it yourself. No other instrument kits give you this level of instructional detail!

These kits and instructional material are a solid introduction to guitarmaking.

These are great sounding guitars!
You get a bookmatched AAA mahogany back and side set. The AAA solid spruce top has been thickness-sanded and profiled. We've slotted the rosewood fingerboard, included pre-cut inlays and a genuine bone nut and saddle.

The bolt-on neck joint is machined for an accurate fit, saving you hours of complicated work. Width at the nut is approximately 1-7/8". Only the final trimming and sanding are required.

Included in the kit is a Hot Rod Truss Rod, to make the neck two-way adjustable.

Save time, save tools.
You don't need to tool up for critical machine work like side bending, shaping the neck and cutting the heel joint. You'll hand build and finish an heirloom quality instrument.

Solid AAA tonewoods: Spruce and mahogany with rosewood bridge and fingerboard
Precision-machined neck joint
Precut heavy cardboard molds for trouble-free body assembly

See the Instructions page for a complete list of what you'll need to build your kit.

You add the tuners.
From years of supplying kits to builders we know that you'll want to choose the finishing touches, so tuners and strings are not included. To personalize your guitar, see our selection for the steel-string tuning machines for slotted pegheads. Pegholes will need to reamed slightly to fit the Schaller tuners.

"What tools do I need to build a kit?"
Our experienced luthiers recommend the right tools to make your build easier and more professional: Tools for Building the Triple-O Guitar Kit

Customize your kit to be a left-handed instrument.
Though our guitar kits are intended for right-handed players, the soundboard bracing patterns can be reversed to build a left-handed instrument. You can make a left-handed bridge from scratch using one of our bridge blanks.

Nice Kits

By Hoss from Portsmouth, NH

Great introductory guitar building kits. I built two dreadnaughts and now the Triple-O. My only complaint is the mahogany sides do not match the cardboard forms in either the dreadnaught or the Triple-O. It was a little nerve racking to bring the sides in using to a point where I could glue the top and back on.

Top Quality Guitar Project

This is the second guitar that I have built. I highly recommend this kit if you are starting out. It's an amazing feeling to play an instrument you have made. Scalloping the braces and tuning the top will make this guitar sing.

Outstanding Introduction to Building!

As a complete novice, and someone with basically zero woodworking experience, this is a fantastic kit to work with. The quality of materials is outstanding - the back, sides and top I received are beautiful, clean specimens, the neck is a gorgeous piece of mahogany, and all other elements are precisely cut and of excellent quality. The video and booklet instructions are very thoughtfully put together so that even a completely uninitiated boob like me can follow them pretty easily. I see no reason why even an experienced builder wouldn't be very pleased with this kit. Altogether, a very, very cleverly constructed and versatile kit for a very cool body style - the 12-fret 000. And of course StewMac's customer service is invariably first rate. I would recommend this kit highly to anyone interested in building a guitar.

Even Impressed the Luthier

By Bill Montante from Kennesaw, GA
(Customer's Reviews) Thursday, December 02, 2010

I was thrilled that my first attempt came out so well. I have a greater respect for the craft after building a guitar. Superb crisp tones. Wasn't 100%. Had some buzzing frets high up the neck and the bridge n saddle needed some tweaking, so I took it to a local luthier. He made the fine adjustment and said, he "was impressed with the quality of sound from a kit guitar." It's set in DADGAD and sits along side my Yairi. I play both proudly and with equal pleasure.

Great first time kit!

I've just complete my first kit and, as the instructions says: I can't stop now, I must build a new guitar

Triple O kit

By Glyn Raven from Florida

Without doubt one of the most comprehensive kits in the Stewmac catalogue. I put a kit together about 3 years ago and the difference is amazing. They make it easy with preformed bracing and sides and yet its still challenging enough to delight you as you see the instrument take shape by following the very clear instructions. I have yet to go into the DVD guide as the book covers everything comprehensively
