General Finishes Waterbase Topcoat

About This Item

The best waterbase finish we've ever used.
A great gloss or satin finish in just one product, with no need for a sealer. Environmentally friendly, nonflammable.

General Finishes High Performance Topcoat is ideal for finishing musical instruments. It goes on without foaming or sagging, dries hard and sands easily.

  • Crystal clear, non-yellowing PolyAcrylic blend
  • Mixes well with ColorTone® liquid stains and waterbase pigments
  • Apply with a foam brush, or spray
  • Soap-and-water cleanup

1-quart can.

One can goes a long way! One quart will finish:
1 acoustic guitar body and neck
2 entire mandolins
2 to 3 solid guitar or bass bodies
3 to 5 electric guitar or bass necks
4 ukuleles
2 to 3 dulcimers
2 to 3 banjo rims and necks

Keep in mind there are many application variables: your spray gun adjustments, PSI used, how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

Garrett

I too found your conclusions Garrett, but after finishing several instruments, I found the final cure time a lot longer than is expected. It does toughen up, have faith. Unfortunately in Europe we are not allowed to use nitrocellulose anymore, but in the end of the day I was glad I was forced to use this product, and by the time I understood it's peculiarities, I actually prefer it now. Top class. P.S Garrett, after you finally buff the instrument, you might want to leave it cure another 2-3 weeks, you won't be disappointed.

First time user.  Worked Great!

Excellent product. I sprayed using a Fuji HVLP turbine setup. Once I dialed in the flow I followed the schedule and instructions on Stewmac site and experienced no issues. Yes, I most certainly will use this product again in the future!

Maybe it was me but...

I didn't have good luck with this at all. I used it on my first guitar (from scratch, not a kit) and this was my first finish job. I followed the instructions from this website as well as the ones on the can 100%. I brushed on 12 total coats. The finish never seemed to fully cure and is slightly tacky to the touch. It is also really soft. I can create a dent in the finish easily by barely rubbing it with a pick or fingernail. I will not use this on my next build, sorry. Honestly, as much as I hate to do it, I will probably attempt the daunting task of removing all of this finish and using something different. It offers my guitar next to no protection. It is also cloudy on end grain areas (probably me not removing sanded finish well enough). Not impressed at all but then again this is my first time..

This is by far the best water-based lacquer I've ever used. I was a little disappointed when the colortone lacquer was discontinued, but this far outranks that old stuff. I hand brush my lacquers and this product is easy to apply and produces a great shine. I used 15 coats level sanding after every 3 w/320grit and was ready to do the final wet sanding w/1200 up to 4000 after 7 days.

Great Lacquer

This is a great finish that sprays well without the need for a sealer. It cures hard and buffs easily but I learnt by experience that you need to use very fine grades to level sand. Scratches can be difficult to remove so I won't be using anything less than 1200 on the next build.
