ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquer

The easiest way to spray a professional finish! Produces a beautiful traditional nitrocellulose lacquer finish, without elaborate spray equipment.

ColorTone® Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable finish that enhances the beauty of the wood.

Available in convenient 13-ounce spray cans.

ColorTone® Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer can be applied over smooth bare wood, sanded basecoats of grain filler, ColorTone Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Perfect for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a first finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, however, and more sanding may be needed for a level surface.

Number of cans needed may vary depending on how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

ColorTone Clear Satin Lacquer typically requires fewer coats. Successive thin coats should be sanded to maintain a level surface. Don't sand the final coat; the flattener in the lacquer will give a smooth satin appearance.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

Good stuff but...

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I've been using this for a while now with great results. Lately however, the spray nozzles and the amount of the contents that I can get out of the can have been very inconsistent. I've gotten up to 10 coats from a can and as little as 5 coats from another on the same project even though I heat the cans to the same temp. When I find a nozzle that sprays well I keep it.

Worked well. I dont have any complaints. Be aware that it is very smelly and the fumes are pretty bad even when its drying. Make sure you have a good place to spray it.

I like the way it darkens up the wood and accents the grain. The only problem I had with it is that when spraying it spits,Even when the can is heated in a pan of hot water.

This stuff was reasonably priced, it arrived quickly, was easy to use and the results were excellent - even for a first time user like me. I would definitely use this product again, Thanks Stew-Mac!

Professional results from a spray can

By
(Customer's Reviews)

Just follow the directions for professional results, heating the can before spraying was the tip that made the difference. Light coats, be patient and you will be proud of the mirror finish this product produces. I highly recommend and can't believe I actually produced something that looks professional, a local luthier asked "Did you finish your banjo neck, nice job" and he sees all kinds.

So far the finish looks amazing on Les Paul, I'm currently waiting for the finish to cure to final sand and buff. Easy to use, must warm can to have good flow and finish.

Lacquer in a can, what a helper!

By
(Customer's Reviews)

These canned ColorTone lacquers help me do the little stuff so I don't have to break out any spray guns, even though they can certainly be used for larger projects.

this one is much better than the clear high gloss lacquer spray cans normally found in big hardware stores. More glossy.

for years i have been doing things the old school way. mix delute spray gun wait weeks and then finish.
picked up a can if color tone sealer and satin laquer to make finish repairs on a neck and lo and behold within 24 hours it was repaired and back in action. no need to wait weeks and weeks for the spray gun method to cure depending on the size and quality you need this stuff works. will keep it around for sure.
