ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquer

The easiest way to spray a professional finish! Produces a beautiful traditional nitrocellulose lacquer finish, without elaborate spray equipment.

ColorTone® Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable finish that enhances the beauty of the wood.

Available in convenient 13-ounce spray cans.

ColorTone® Nitrocellulose Guitar Lacquer can be applied over smooth bare wood, sanded basecoats of grain filler, ColorTone Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Perfect for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a first finish without elaborate setup or equipment. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns, however, and more sanding may be needed for a level surface.

Number of cans needed may vary depending on how heavy the coats are applied, number of coats, and desired thickness on your instrument.

ColorTone Clear Satin Lacquer typically requires fewer coats. Successive thin coats should be sanded to maintain a level surface. Don't sand the final coat; the flattener in the lacquer will give a smooth satin appearance.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquer

I was NOT wanting to write a negative review about this product, but unfortunately I have to. This product has proven to be inconsistent from lot to lot. I've been building and repairing guitars for nearly 40 years. I do have pro spray equipment as well. But from time to time the paint booth is being used and another solution is needed when it comes to some small touch up work. But in the case of this product it has usually sprayed 'gray' right out of the can requiring me to sand off and re-prep my project. My shop is air conditioned with VERY low humidity as well. I've ALWAYS followed the product's instructions to the letter as well, but most of the time it's the same result. Other products don't do this and I'm positive that the problem lies with colortone here. Over the years, I've never needed blush eraser when spraying since I've always sprayed VERY light coats. Oh and other Colortone aerosol products like the Black have given me similar results. Sorry Colortone, but I just wanted to warn everyone about this. So I'll sand off the gray, Re-prep it, then it's back to my paint booth.

This color tone stuff is really nice. Easy to use & does a good job. Had no problem doing a 3 color sunburst. Some of these cans came with an oversize button on the top which made life a lot easier & a lot nicer to use rather than the standard little button your finger gets in the spray. Follow the instructions & think the job thru & should be a piece of cake.

This goes on smooth, burns in nicely, and buffs out really shiny. It did stay softer longer than anticipated, I ended up getting some damage from handling the body (normally) and playing the guitar over 3 weeks after spraying. It seemed plenty cured when I buffed it out, but was still very susceptible to nicks and bumps, as I found out. Previously I've used water based products and found them to cure hard more quickly than the nitro, which is surprising.

Great coverage, great look. Nice deep gloss. It's a little tricky to use - you have to be careful about temperature and humidity when you spray. Other than that, it's great if you want to do the occasional finish job.

this product sprays easy and is great if you have something that is all ready completely sealed and no grain but it doesn't layer up thick at all and take a ton to fill in any grain marks
