The name is misleading. I'm building a pearloid model banjo (style 11). With the painstaking graphics applied and ready for sealing this vinyl Behlen vinyl sealer was applied over the graphics. Then after a couple of days, masked to paint the blue neck and resonator walls. Next step was to begin the process of clear coating (final finish). Shot a couple of light coats to get started. Removed the masking tape from the pearloid. With it came the sealer coat everywhere except under the graphics themselves. This resulted in a plateau of finish buildup over each graphic. I had to strip the graphics off with thinner and start all over. Very frustrating and much time wasted. On a positive note, the sealer applied directly to bare wood seems to do fine.

Excellent, works great

I've used this now on several projects, and it works so well I'll never use anything else if I'm using nitrocellulose lacquer. As a hobbyist, I use low-end spray equipment; the guns I use are so cheap they're practically disposable, and even with these it sprays great right from the can. It sands easily enough, but the big difference between this and lacquer-based sealers is you get immediate, consistent build from the first finish coat, especially on close-grained woods like maple or alder.

VERY easy to apply and forgiving. I brushed the first thin coat on expecting to have a lot of sanding to do afterward...WRONG! On drip was all that I had and sanding was a breeze. Second coat was reduced 50-50 and sprayed on. Easy as pie and no runs on my fiddle. One more coat after I do the inlays and I'll be ready for my Behlen lacquer finish

After i started using a decent compressor, the stuff was brilliant. Thinned it 50-50. Before that it looked like I blew snot all over the guitar...

Haven't quite figured this stuff out, but it seems to work fine as a prep/primer under the stringed instrument nitro.

Not a drip run or error, really straight forward product. Used three coats after grain plugging, with a nitro topcoat. A northern ash strat body and all is good. This sealer was smooth and did real well for me.

Great product from Behlen! Doesn't need thinning either.

 Best vinyl sealer

By

This material is the best sealer I've ever used. It goes on nicely and will sand to a powder in a half hour. The shrink rate is very modest. When laid on, then wet sanded after an hour, it will generally fill the grain. Another light coat and the guitar is ready for lacquer. Care must be taken to tumble the can gently by hand to disperse the solids and not introduce bubbles.
