Behlen's high grade solvent for shellac and alcohol based stains.

Behkol has several important roles in the guitar shop:

  • Mix Behkol™ with our ColorTone Liquid Stains, for colors that won't raise the wood grain.
  • It's the solvent for shellac flakes, and works with mineral oil and shellac for traditional French polishing.
  • It's alcohol lamp fuel, for melting lacquer touchup sticks and heating a disassembly knife.
  • It's a great degreaser for metal parts and cleans oil from new tools, too.

How to clean and lube dirty old guitar tuners

Dirty tuners filled with dried gunk: Dan Erlewine's working on a guitar that's been sitting untouched for over fifty years. The tuners are too stiff to use, but he gets them going again by using heat, naphtha and an injection of lubricant. He makes a nifty little tuner-holder jig, too.

I purchased some of this after watching Bryan Galloup use it to remove blushing from a guitar body after steaming off the neck. I was pleased to find that the Behkol removed the blushing just like in the video.

Good solvent for mixing shellac but do not use over lacquer finishes as a cleaner.
