Our first choice for filling the pores of open-grain woods. Compatible with all stains and finishes.

The first step to a flawless professional finish!
ColorTone Waterbase Grain Filler is our first choice for filling and leveling the pores of open-grain woods, such as rosewood, ash, koa and mahogany, before spraying a finish. No shrinking or cracking; it dries faster than other types of fillers, and sands easily. Supplied in 4-ounce jars, ready to mix with water.

"It's grain filler, wood putty, crack filler, hole-filler and mistake-patcher, all rolled into one product. The colors are natural and realistic."
—Dan Erlewine

  • Waterbase, non-toxic, solvent-free and nonflammable
  • Compatible with all finishes, including nitrocellulose and waterbase lacquers
  • Compatible with most stains, waterbase pigments, sealers and topcoats
  • Traditional guitar colors
  • Neutral is a light base filler for custom tinting
  • Easy to apply, dries fast and sands easily
  • Fills wood pores without sinking, shrinking or cracking

ColorTone Grain Filler is supplied in paste form, ready to mix with water (10-15 percent water works well for us) and brush on the wood. Let it dry, sand the surface level, and clean with a damp cloth. It's that easy, and you're ready to spray a smooth, blemish-free professional finish. No shelf-life problems: if the filler dries hard in your cup, simply add more water.

Why use grain filler? Unfinished rosewood, mahogany, koa and ash have porous "open-grained" surfaces. Filling and leveling the pores leaves the surface smooth for applying uniform finish coats. Using a contrasting filler color can often enhance the grain as well.

A must have for any porous wood project

Started my second build, an ash bodied Strat. I learned the hard way on the first tele project that grain filler is a must if you want a pro finish to be proud of. You can't rush this kind of work. Got the ash colored product, applied two repetitive coats and the color coat went on like silk. Now clear coating it and it looks like a mirror. Get some of this stuff!! You'll be glad you did!

Great stuff...

Got the full set for some builds... just used the ebony to fill a swamp ash tele back and sides really made the grain look good.. works better if it sits more than the recomended 24 hrs before nitro finishing or staining..

Works as well or better than any grain filler I've used so far. Decent price, good sized bottle. I'll buy more when I need it again.

Works Well

It's a fairly generous amount for the price compared to some of the other brands. It's a soft consistency, doesn't require much water to thin. Similar consistency to drywall mud. Beware the white is WHITE. Overall I find it just as nice to work with as Timbermate, if not a little better. Will buy again.

Grain Filler

This stuff is great as a filler to get a great finish - But it is also a great thing to use to make over sized fret side markers as well - Seal the side of the fingerboard - Drill your holes as needed - And fill them with this filler - Wipe the extra off with a damp rag - Let it dry - And then re wipe any residue after it has dried - Re do if needed with more filler - I used a 1/8" Brad point bit to make a clean hole - And use nat. filler for a great vintage clay dot look - Once finished - I then seal over them - Nice big side markers for this old dog - Also great to fill holes on fingerboard when moving dots - Or for other inlay work - Like fancy dots or head inlay work - And will not harm any set finish - Mike.
