ColorTone Waterbase Grain Filler

About This Item

Our first choice for filling the pores of open-grain woods. Compatible with all stains and finishes.

The first step to a flawless professional finish!
ColorTone Waterbase Grain Filler is our first choice for filling and leveling the pores of open-grain woods, such as rosewood, ash, koa and mahogany, before spraying a finish. No shrinking or cracking; it dries faster than other types of fillers, and sands easily. Supplied in 4-ounce jars, ready to mix with water.

"It's grain filler, wood putty, crack filler, hole-filler and mistake-patcher, all rolled into one product. The colors are natural and realistic."
—Dan Erlewine

  • Waterbase, non-toxic, solvent-free and nonflammable
  • Compatible with all finishes, including nitrocellulose and waterbase lacquers
  • Compatible with most stains, waterbase pigments, sealers and topcoats
  • Traditional guitar colors
  • Neutral is a light base filler for custom tinting
  • Easy to apply, dries fast and sands easily
  • Fills wood pores without sinking, shrinking or cracking
ColorTone Grain Filler is supplied in paste form, ready to mix with water (10-15 percent water works well for us) and brush on the wood. Let it dry, sand the surface level, and clean with a damp cloth. It's that easy, and you're ready to spray a smooth, blemish-free professional finish. No shelf-life problems: if the filler dries hard in your cup, simply add more water.

Why use grain filler? Unfinished rosewood, mahogany, koa and ash have porous "open-grained" surfaces. Filling and leveling the pores leaves the surface smooth for applying uniform finish coats. Using a contrasting filler color can often enhance the grain as well.

Good grain filler

Easy to use and seems to be very good. It was my first attempt at an ash body guitar. I'm not a pro so I'm sure this stuff is great if you know how to use it. I'm satisfied that it's better at grain filling than I am. I would use it again.

Good but Brittle

By
(Customer's Reviews)

First time user so maybe I did it wrong. It works very well for filling holes. I imagine it'd do just as well for filling grain. But it's so brittle it couldn't hold up to pressure from the strings when I tried to fill a gap between peg holes on a bridge. It filled okay and sanded okay, but once a string under tension touched it the filler just shattered. Something to keep in mind. I recommend it for all the other applications, though. It took stain nicely and sanded smooth and filled the holes completely. I had no other trouble with it at all. I especially like that you can let it go dry overnight and just add a little bit of water the next day and it's good to go. Thanks!

Greatly simplified finishing

By
(Customer's Reviews)

The ColorTone pore-filler has greatly simplified filling pores in rosewood when finishing guitars. It works much better than the solvent based fillers I have used before. They either dried too fast or too slow, and were very hard and tedious to sand. I'll take the ColorTone filler any day.

As always from S-M a Fine Product

I bought this filler to take care of some gouges I (carelessly) made while building a guitar rim. Just as promised, it's easy to work with, thins to the consistency you need, and cleans up easily. [This last was very important, as I got some on a nice pair of pants -- water cleaned it up quickly.]

The only reason I gave it a four instead of a five is that I think the color (rosewood) is lighter than it should be. In the container, it's plenty dark, but it dried lighter than I wanted. Hopefully, sanding and rubbing in will let it blend nicely with the rosewood body.

Overall, I'm very pleased.
