ColorTone Liquid Stains

About This Item

Spectacular sunbursts, vintage tints and head-turning modern colors: ColorTone concentrated stains mix with virtually any finish, and are formulated specifically for luthiers.

They're accurate and authentic stringed instrument colors, as researched and specified by our own guitar finishing experts—not the generic furniture colors you'll find at other suppliers.

These concentrated grain-enhancing stains are economical; a little goes a long way. Reduce them with alcohol or water to give bare wood beautiful fade-resistant color, without hiding the grain. They're versatile, too. For applying transparent color-tinted coats, ColorTone stains can be mixed directly into virtually any finish: nitrocellulose lacquer, shellac, waterbase finishes, and catalyzed varnishes or lacquers.

Available in 2-ounce bottles, in the most popular stringed instrument colors. SAVE when you order the set of all ten!

Make wood grain come alive!
ColorTone liquid stains are lightfast metal-complex dyes that can be mixed for practically any desired intensity. Unlike off-the-shelf hardware store stains, they're formulated for guitar finishing. One 2-ounce bottle makes two quarts of stain at normal concentration. Because they're liquids, they can be measured precisely for critical color matching—a plus for refinishing and touchup work. (See our handy stain mixing cups and pipettes.)

Trade Secrets!

Trade Secrets!

Coloring new binding to match the old stuff

We've watched Dan Erlewine repair this 1930s Kay over the previous 3 Trade Secrets. It's time to finish it up. Elliot John-Conry of EJC Guitars ages Dan's patch of new plastic binding so it blends in with the old binding around it. About the guitar in this video: This 1930s Kay Deluxe is a fixer-upper that Dan Erlewine repaired in order to sell. Now that it's in great shape again, maybe Dan'll keep it!

How to match color on vintage binding repairs

Working on an aged Les Paul, Erick Coleman has to sand part of the yellowed binding. The sanded spots are a glaring white mismatch. Erick makes turns the repair invisible with a little ColorTone spray and stain.

I've always used the stain for new builds and repairs. Can count on it every time. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for..

Doesn't work with Catalyzed Urethane paints

By
(Customer's Reviews)

Mixed with Catalyzed Urethane clear coat for a transparent red finish (Cardinal coatings instrument paint). Color matched PERFECT but dried surface was rubbery and not hard like a clear coat should be. I only mixed a small amount to do a 2"x2" headstock repair and blended with an airbrush, then plan to re-clear the whole instrument. The clear coat is 2 to 1 on the material/hardener ratio and the amount of stain added was not that much. Not sure how the product works with nitro as I have not tested with it. Product description says works with most finishes and lists a large number of finishes and does not say urethane, which does not play nice.

First Time Cherry Red Colortone Liquid Stain User

By

When I first opened the box and looked at the label and saw 2 fl oz's. I thought "This looks like a lot more than 2 oz's!". I experimented first with a little less than a 1/2 oz of the stain drawn with a pipette about 2 pipettes worth and reduced it with water starting with 2 pipettes all the up to 6 pipettes. I really liked the results of the stain with the 6 parts water. I let it dry and sanded it and applied another coat. My goal is to stain a Sunburst look to a guitar body. There was hardly any noticable smell to the stain. It was easy to clean up with water. I can wait to get started!

I'm completely satisfied.

My experience is limited, since I only use these stains in water based applications. However, I find they work very well in water. I can get soft or rich colors depending on the amount used. The stain dries quickly and gives a vibrant appearance when a clear finish is sprayed over it. I have used most of their colors and never been disappointed. I recommend these stains!

Colortone stains

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I am sold on the colortone stain for color, however, I was not sure about the chooses of colors. I did not want a pure red and the cherry looked a little too red for me. I had previously ordered a brown so when I got the red I put four drops of brown to the mix (nitrocellulose lacquer, cherry and brown stain) and it popped – I love the color I got. I give the colortone stains five stars.
