Kerfed Guitar Linings

About This Item

We offer traditional angle-cut linings with kerfing that faces outward, and a newer radiused style with reverse kerfing.

The reverse style can add more stiffness to the sides, and a smoother appearance inside the body.

Traditional kerfed linings
7/32" x 9/16" x 15-1/2"
(5.56mm x 14.29mm x 393.70mm)
Reverse kerfed linings
7/32" x 5/8" x 16"
(5.56mm x 15.88mm x 406.40mm)

Kerfed lining ("kerfing") forms a surface for gluing and reinforcing a guitar's soundboard, sides and back. Each lining is kerfed (slotted) to allow easy bending to fit a guitar's curved sides.

Dreadnought and National™ style guitars require eight strips. Dobro® and soundwell instruments require twelve strips. Specially sized kerfed lining for mandolins (also for dulcimers) are available.

I like the reverrse kerving

By

Verified Buyer

I've developed a preference for reverse kerfing. I like the pronounced stiffening effect it has on the sides. Whether this is rational or not may be questionable -- I haven't been doing this long enough to have sufficient experience to make a truly informed choice, though all the instruments I've built using it have turned out well. Ii you do want to use reverse kerfing, this stuff should be quite satisfactory. I've found it to be well made and uniform in thickness. No complaints about it at all..

kerf guitar linings

It take two pieces to do a side. StewMac should consider selling one piece 32 inches long in addition to its current 16 inch long offering.

Good Product

I recently purchased a bulk order of 100 regular kerf linings basswood. It's a good product. I enjoy the kerf portion of acoustic construction and these kerf linings bend easily around fairly sharp curves. My only hangup is the price. I think for purchasing 100 of them, the price should come down substantially more. But these are essential and I've tried cutting my own which is a very laborious and imperfect process.

The linings were right on size and glued up nicely. Sure beats making them yourself! Thank you StewMac .

the reverse kerfing is easy to glue in & looks clean through the sound hole / i noticed that with the reverse style the side structure is very stable and strong / i have always made my own kerfing but at age 76 i'm goin for yours !

Don't like the short lengths

By

Verified Buyer

I didn't notice that they were so short. Nobody else sells them this short. SM should either sell them in lengths that just about every other supplier uses, emphasize the short lengths in the description, or add something to the effect that 6 to 8 are needed for a guitar. Pricing is pretty steep for such short lengths too.

wish I had seen the size before ordering

The kerfing itself is nice quality, I just wish I had scrolled all the way down the page and seen that it is short sections, not the full length needed to do 1 side of a guitar. I would not have ordered it. Evidently other people have had the same issue so I think Stew Mac should consider listing the size with the price.

Horrible sizing for the price

I can't believe that I have to buy 6 or more units to finish a guitar. This is highway robbery, make a shallow depth template on your bandsaw and make your own
