Archtop Tops

About This Item

These are the bookmatched European spruce wedges we supply to Benedetto Guitars for their terrific archtops.

Builders often call this "German spruce," but it actually comes from Slovakia, Slovenia and Romania. This is among the most sought-after guitar tonewoods. Choose it for constantly superior grain and tonal responsiveness.

"As always, the service, quality of wood, prices and convenience are the absolute finest. I now depend on StewMac to supply me for all my archtop tops and backs." —Bob Benedetto

Bookmatched set of two, for joining and carving.

Each wedge is approximately
23-1/2" x 9" x 1-1/4" (597mm x 228mm x 32mm)

Roll the Dice

I along with a few other luthiers I know, purchased the same grade of tops and all recieved vastly different boards. One was a excellently quatersawn and book matched board with very tight grain throughout and even had some light bear claw figure, a very good deal for the price. The board I recieved was acceptably quatersawn(although on the slanted side of the spectrum) somewhat tight grain in the center but at the edge of the board the grains were 1-2 per inch, and had a huge chunk on the side missing from what appears to have once been a knot. This is not reflective of the quality indicated at purchase. I don't expect every single piece to be perfect in every way, and none of these flaws on their own would be so bad but the combination led me to be very disappointed with the top. I would have liked to return it when I recieved it but I have some time constraints that would make returning and waiting on another top to arrive very difficult. I like to get what I order when i order it and not roll the dice on whether or not it will be the grade that I requested.

Typical of Stew-Mac high quality

I'm tempted to give these tops a really bad review so I can hoard them all for myself, but I have to be honest about it. The wood I received was better than most of the wood I've found in other places. A couple of the pieces had minor issues that many makers would probably not find problematic. I called to ask for a replacement and the folks at Stew Mac immediately emailed me a return label and sent out a new top which met my rather rigorous standards. Here's the big secret that I'm reluctant to share.

I re-sawed these tops into lute tops, getting four tops from each set. Now I've got four lute tops of beautiful German Spruce for the cost of one classical guitar top anywhere else. I also had enough left over for braces, and two tops for a couple of small Renaissance guitars. All from one set of archtop boards. See why I want to keep it a big secret? As a former board member of the Guild of American Luthiers, I am automatically predisposed to share information, not hide it. Here's a baroque guitar I built from this wood.
Thanks Stew-Mac for saving me a bundle!

when in doubt use the return option.

I had chosen to spend the money on a AAA top. The top-wood arrived with a blue stain on one half. I suppose I could have packaged it up with all the hassle of packing, mailing, waiting for another to arrive or chance it that the mold stain would be carved out when done. My mistake.

Gonna be hard to sell with the asymmetrical pattern on the book-matched front. I must say however that stew mac did rectify another mistake when I got a non compound radiused fret board in the post. They sent me the right one right away and allowed me to keep the other one as well.
