Torrefied Sitka Spruce Soundboard for Small Guitar

About This Item

Already "broken in" for stability and tone.
Torrefied spruce is dimensionally stable (non-shrinking), with the clear tone and warm color of well-aged vintage tonewood.

Bookmatched sets of two quartersawn halves. When joined they're large enough for classical, 000, and parlor size guitars.

  • Each half is approximately 7-7/8" x 20-1/2" (200mm x 521mm)
  • Thickness-sanded to 0.125" - 0.130" (3.18mm - 3.30mm)

About torrefied wood
It takes years for a new guitar to break in, to develop its tone and realize its full potential. As tonewood ages, its cell structure goes through changes, becoming much more resonant and responsive. After a few years, you get the payoff: you begin to hear the sound of a vintage guitar.

With the introduction of torrefied woods, professional builders are giving their guitars a head start on tone. The wood is heat-treated in an oxygen-free kiln, making it highly resonant and extremely stable. It's as if the wood is pre-aged. It looks and sounds like wood that's been broken in for many years.

Great wood, great grain. Would by it again

The recieved torrified stika for my parlor O28 guitar project was great. Real AAA, with even grain and strenght. It was quite "ready to use" thinkness of about 3 milimeters. After sanding I got a soundboard of less than 2 milimeters thick !!! Take great care when sanding as torrified wood sands very easily. Sound is very good for a parlor, definite highs and pretty low bass for the size.

Give it a try

This guitar is about 9 months old now and it sounds quite nice. It is my 16th build and was a bit of an experiment. I used torrefied bracing also. It's super light and very resonant with nice chimey trebles. It has darkened a lot over the winter. Much darker than this picture.
I will be using this wood again.

Exactly as described

I purchased two unsanded matched sets of the Spruce tops. When they say that they are AAA rating I would agree. One that I received is an absolute master grade top AAAA ( completely silked and tight grained) the other was a solid AA ( grain spacing was a bit wide throughout, but even and no silking) - so on average they are AAA. Both had perfectly straight grain, no warpage. Torrefication process was very even, with no color difference between the two sides. Flex on both sets is even across the boards. I'll buy these again.

what a concept! soundboard is of great quality and definitely has a 'broken-in' look to it. boards are stiffer than comparable standard boards. color tends toward the brown/grey/greenish tint rather than golden/honey/sunburst sorta look that we might expect from an old soundboard. bought it for a light walnut triple-O (size is more than adequate for triple-O), but might use it with a 'grey-er' and/or darker wood for a better match. be aware that the aging process may produce a soundboard that is appreciably darker than your back/side so consider this in your design plan. anyway, overall, a great product! lives up to its description. wonderfully stiff and stable - had crazy tone just coming out of the box!
