Peghead Overlay Veneer

About This Item

The peghead overlay is the face of your stringed instrument: the finishing touch of quality. Rosewood and ebony are the well-established favorites for this purpose.

Thickness-sanded to 3/32" (2.38mm), these veneers are large enough for guitar, banjo or mandolin.

0983 Ebony 4" x 8" x 3/32" (106mm x 203mm x 2.38mm)
0991 Ebony 3-1/2" x 7" x 3/32" (89mm x 178mm x 2.38mm)
0981 Rosewood 3-1/2" x 7" x 3/32" (89mm x 178mm x 2.38mm)

Important:
Ebony is usually not uniformly black.
We offer Black Fingerboard Stain, as used by Gibson®, Paul Reed Smith® and other makers for darkening the streaks on ebony fingerboards, bridges and peghead overlays.

Always the best materials

From the two acoustic guitar kits I built to the smallest order, Stew Mac offers the very best in items related to building stringed instruments. The Ebony peghead overlay is offered in two sizes. It is uniform in every dimension and perfect for the 335 copy I am currently building.

Would not purchase again

Don't get me wrong, I find some of the best materials from StewMac, but I would not likely purchase peghead plates from them again. Although the length and width of the veneer was useable, the thickness was barely 5/64" at the center and both edges tapered off to barely 1/16". And because they were thickness sanded with such a coarse grit, require substantial sanding.

This may not be an issue for some, but for me it is unacceptable for two reasons. First, these plates are priced at a premium - 3 plates with shipping ran $75. I should be able to arrive with a finished dimension of 3/32 thick after sanding, and none of these plates measured up. It leaves little room to true up one side, before gluing to the neck, then have any margin for sanding after inlaying, and final finish sanding.

Secondly, it barely leaves wiggle room to bind the headpiece (the binding ends up more narrow than is acceptable, leaving the only option to pad the veneer with other veneers beneath it so a more asthetical binding can be accomplished - more work which should not be needed. And, because the Ebony is so thin to begin with, it isn't plausible to chamfer the headpiece. A total headache.

I get why a supplier would make or source infinitely thinner materials. Pure greed. A few more slices from a log, and doubling the price of each unit is a good thing if you're the seller. These are worth about $5 each. Very disappointing to see this trend in tonewood suppliers. In any case, I would not recommend this item.

Ebony Veneer

The ebony was very dark in color. The lighter grains easily disappeared with varnish. Nice piece of wood.

Really nice material!

This material is very nice! Evenly sanded to the thickness and ready to be shaped and glued on. I make my necks with the head stock grafted onto the neck shaft using the old Martin compound bridal joint and I want the best overlay possible to give it even more strength. This is a bit time consuming and I like having good material so I can get the job done quicker while still keeping the quality. Good product, as with ALL of Stew-Mac's products. Thanks!

Nice overlay

I'm building a turn-of-the-century take on a banjo and this ebony overlay is perfect for that purpose. Even in color, straight tight grain, it's going to make a great backdrop for the over the top inlay that's going to go in it. Just beautiful. It's really nice having a company you can depend on to supply quality goods at reasonable costs.

Fine for what I used it for

My rosewood has inconsistent colour and is yellowish on 1/3. I bought it to use for timber side dot material, so I was able to get enough good colour rosewood for the dots.
