Update from before.

I was going to use the first neck they sent. I could have fixed the problems with it but Stew Macs service department E-Mailed me (At no request from me) and insisted they send me a new one even though I started to work on it. Kudos and a piece of raisin pie to the service department just for caring. Now the new neck has some minor flaws but is 10 times better than the first. Minus 1 star for that but plus 1 star for the excellent service. Once again - Thank You Stewart MacDonald.

Don't know what to say.

I was looking for a quality neck for a high quality build. I figured with Stew Macs reputation and the price tag, I was going to get a nice one. First off if this is quarter sawn the cut it out of the wrong corner, not even close. But it is a true one piece, no scarf joints. It is twisted about 3 degrees counterclockwise, the tuner holes were drilled on a angle, no big deal I have to enlarge them anyway for some Grover's (By the way I got them from SM and they are excellent). The general routing is not the best. It looks like something that was rushed by an employee about an hour before closing on a Friday night. I know this was made in rough form for more custom ability but with all the extra work I have to do to fix the problems with it, I could have gotten one from E-Bay for 30 bucks with no difference. Sorry Stem Mac for the bad review but this neck is poor quality.

Response from StewMac

We are very sorry to hear you were unhappy with the neck you received. I sent you an email regarding getting a replacement neck sent to you right away. It sounds like a bad one got past our QC and we would be more than happy to fix this for you.

Better machining would make a better product

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I love StewMac products and have used them for years but, unfortunately, they haven’t produced anything more than a very average product here. They make no outrageous claims as to the machined finish of this piece but I didn’t expect a neck that was only 75% of the way to a finished neck. Maybe that’s the intent …to increase builder flexibility but the dimension margins are just too small. Any serious shaping has to be done with a careful eye on the nut width which is minimal to start with. The headstock is very narrow, narrower than a standard Martin headstock and there is little room for alterations. The machining is somewhat crude. I don’t know what kind of CNC router/shaper the company employs but it does a very rough job of shaping. The first neck I received from SM had to be sent back due to gouges in the carving. The attachment bolts are cheap and they look like screw bolts and nuts one would buy at the local hardware store and they are not the kind of hardware one would put on a fine instrument.

bolt-on 14th fret

Well shaped mahogany.Stained well and bolted on well.Perfectly cut truss rod channel. You'll need a triple bend truss rod wrench, Item # 6212, to access the truss rod nut. But with this wrench it works like a charm.

the easy part of being in business is selling your product. Follow up and customer service is how you keep people coming back. Stew Mac dose it right. My neck was just tad out of true and they set me new one no problem. Great website and they respond to emails promptly. Good job!

Nice Rough Neck !!

By
(Customer's Reviews)

Perfect neck for any speedy project, doesn't require much sanding to finish. Only downside I found is that the 14" HotRod they recommend for it is a bit tight at the nut (allen key insert silver brazed on the threaded rod) but brass blocks fit perfectly.

12 fret dovetail neck

By
(Customer's Reviews)

Rough finish in all the wrong places, back of headstock, tuner holes appear to have been drilled after slots cut resulting in some chip out. The biggest problem was the nut width was only 46.2 mm rather than specified 47.62mm but managed to get round this one. Plenty of room for improvement, maybe sharpen tools!

Mahogany 12 fret neck

A bit rough for the price. I expected a closer tolerance carve. One small imperfection in the wood, but otherwise clear stock.

Time is money, no compromise on quality.

I do nearly all 12-fret instruments and sometimes an order just won't wait, so in a time-crunch, this neck and matching block save the day. Top quality adds to the pleasure of using these parts.
